Chapter 19: A Secret Between Friends
(In Eric and Ariel’s castle.)
The royal wives/mothers were all waiting anxiously in the living room, waiting for their husbands to return with their precious children. All of them hoped the kids were safe and unharmed; wondering why they would enter the forest so late at night.
Cinderella looked out at the moon which had just appeared from behind some clouds. “I hope the children are alright...” she said softly. Aurora, who was pacing a little near her, went over and gently squeezed her shoulders in reassurance. “Don’t worry.” She assured. “I’m sure they’re all on their way back right now.”
“Your Majesties!” A soldier’s voice called out, getting the women’s attention. “We have returned!” Instantly, the queens hurried to the large living room window, hoping it was their husbands. Sadly, their faces and hopes fell when they saw it was just two guards escorting a middle-aged man dressed in forest garbs.
Ariel opened the door a little and one of the guards came to her. “Your majesty, you need to remain inside.” He explained, but the fiesty redhead was not deterred so easily. “What’s going on?” She asked. “Who is that man?”
“That’s Shadow-sneak...” The soldier explained. “The leader of the bandits that have been plaguing us for some time.” “We captured him on our way to look for the children.” he added. “Now, we’re escorting him to the dungeons to await trial for his crimes.” The women gasped and grew more worried about their loved ones.
As the guards escorted Shadow-sneak away, the bandit leader took a glimpse at the lovely women and a cunning plan hatched in his mind. Soon, he would find a way to escape and get his revenge on those little brats and their monster pals!
“Oh dear!” Snow White spoke up worriedly. “They captured the leader, but...wasn’t there...any signs of...?” “MOTHER!!” She was interrupted by a familiar voice in the distance. All the queens went outside and peered into the distance. To their relief and great joy, they saw their children, all riding on top horses and coming with them were their fathers and three of their mothers!
Coming up first was Melody and Eric, followed by Tracy and Charming, Adam and Mainard, Florian and Kathrin, and Phillp between Dianne and Edgard. Next was Aladdin and Malak, Jasmine and Azad, Radelle and Naveen, Mulan and Jin, Li Shang and Ping and finally Rapunzel and Garrick with Eugene and Luciana.
“Hey mom!” Melody exclaimed, waving her arms at Ariel. “We’re back!” The redhead queen wasted no time running forward and the others following suit. Soon, all the other queens were hugging their children tightly; some of them peppering them with kisses. The others watched smiling, glad they were all together and safe.
“Sweetheart, are you alright?” Belle asked her son in concern, checking him up and down. “Did you bruise or cut yourself?” “I’m fine, mom...” Mainard replied, his face red in embarrassment. Back home, he often got into scrapes, especially on his wilder adventures. He was a bit embarrassed about his mother doing this in front of the girls, especially Tracy. Still, he endured it.
Ariel hugged her daughter tightly for a long moment before she held her at arm's length. “Melody, what were you thinking?!” She questioned, small tears welling up in the redhead’s eyes. “Don’t you know it dangerous to go out in the woods alone, especially at night with those bandits in the woods!?” “I would like to ask you the same thing, young lady...” Cinderella added, just as worried and upset. “Did you know how worried and scared I was about you?!”
Soon, the other mothers were asking the same thing to their children, only for all of them to bow their heads in shame and not speaking a single word. Eric raised his hands to calm them down. “Everyone, I know you all want answers,” He explained. “and I’m sure the kids will have plenty of time to explain inside.”
He turned to the rest of his soldiers. “Put the horses back in the stables,” he ordered. “and be sure to check on the prisoner.” “Yes, your majesty.” The soldiers replied, saluting him before they took the horses back to the stables while the royal families went back inside.
(30 minutes later...)
Melody was in her bedchambers again, dressed in her pajamas and set to go to bed. With her were Tracy, Kathrin, Dianne, Radelle, Ping, Jin, Malak and Luciana. They were all wearing their own unique pajamas and on the ground were sleeping bags.
Despite the numerous guest rooms, the little princesses wanted to have a real sleepover-style occasion with Melody. The boys went to their own guest rooms while the girls were in Melody’s bedchambers, but they weren’t going to sleep just yet. They had a lot of things they wanted to discuss before going to bed.
“Wow...” Kathrin inquired softly. “that was some lecture our parents gave us, isn’t it?” They all nodded their heads, knowing their parents’ frustration and worry was justified. Shortly after being escorted into the palace, the children were bombarded with questions from all their parents. The royals wanted to know why the children were in the forest at night, what they were thinking and what happened to the bandits.
The answers HAD to be believable enough so they could keep their new ‘guardian angels’ out of the spotlight. While it did work, the children were very nervous when Eric mentioned that he, Adam, Charming, Eugene, Shang and Aladdin would head out tomorrow afternoon to find Shadow-sneak's men. All of them hoped they wouldn’t find a trace of their new friends.
After some discussion, the parents decided that the children would be sent to bed early with only some fruit. They would have breakfast in the morning and the servants would make sure they were still in their rooms. In fairness, the children got off light.
Luciana sighed as she fell flat on her sleeping bag. “I never seen my mom so upset before.” She spoke up. “Other than the time Garrick tried giving me a haircut when we were little.” “That’s one thing we have in common.” Malak muttered with a glum look on her face. “Those bandits were kittens compared to my mom.” She shuddered as she remembered how furious her mother was.
Tracy tried to brighten the mood. “Look on the bright side!” She pointed out. “This has been an amazing day and it's only just the start of our stay here!” “Had I known this was to be expected,” she added. “I would have brought some of my animal friends here from home.”
Dianne noticed Melody looking out the window. “Melody, do you think our new friends are still hiding in the forest?” She asked. “Or...do you think they followed us and are hiding nearby?” Melody shook her head as she turned to look at her friend. “Don’t worry.” She replied. “Lok told me that he and his Tribe are hiding in the forest nearby so they’ll be fine.”
She stated. “Still, there are so many questions I want to ask them, so many things I want to know about them.” She placed a hand over her heart and smiled. “I really felt...something when I saw them, especially Lok.” She added. “I think... I think there’s more to him that meets the eye; more than just appearance.”
“You probably think it's stupid that I’m thinking such a thing.” She sighed, blushing in embarrassment. Ping shook her head and smiled a bit. “Actually, me and Jin felt a strange connection with the Saber-Tooth.” She explained. “You have?” Luciana asked in surprise. Ping nodded. “It’s strange...” She replied. “I only just met him, and yet it feels like I known him for all of my life.”
“It’s true.” Jin added, smiling softly. “He reminds me of Ba-Ba, his voice was gentle and kind and his eyes were not the eyes of a monster; they were almost human...” “I felt the same thing when I saw the Hippogriff.” Tracy spoke, smiling as well. “It was the same with me and Azad,” Malak continued. “with that three-headed snake with the spider legs and that giant falcon.”
“For me, it was with the large bull with moose antlers...” Kathrin inquired. “And me with the four-winged bird.” Dianne added. “And me with the giant bull with four horns.” Luciana continued. “And me with the Winged-Serpent and that giant Baboon.” Radelle finished.
The girls looked at each other; they realized they each felt a connection with the Monsuno and it was growing stronger. Kathrin let out a small yawn, which she covered her hand out of manners. “Well, I’m tired of all this excitement.” She told the other girls. “Do you mind if I turn in right now?”
“Of course.” Luciana replied, rubbing her tired eyes. “I think we should all get some sleep.” With that, Kathrin snuggled into her cozy sleeping bag while Dianne, Tracy, Malak, Radelle, Ping, Lin and Luciana did the same. Melody went slowly from the window and climbed onto her own bed.
Once she was in bed, she looked out into the window and saw a brilliant star shining to the right of another bright but smaller star. She recognized it as the Evening Star, something Radelle had told her; it was said that it could grant wishes.
Smiling, Melody whispered to the star on the right. “I wish that our new guardians and friends would stay with me. I wish...that they would protect us like they did tonight...forever.” With that, Melody fell fast asleep, and surprisingly, she and the girls had the same dream. In their dreams, they were playing and having fun with the Monsuno; going on adventures and exploring new worlds.
