My first grey hairs started coming in when I was a teenager, and by the time I graduated from law school (25 3/4), my hair was solid grey. This is, apparently, not unusual in Irish males, and even some Irish females (supposedly, my paternal grandmother had the same thing, which is likely where it came from).
You put your finger on a key point re the story. My father (with a good deal of help from my mother) took pride in his appearance, and liked to be well-turned out. One of the things he hated toward the end was having his hair mussed up, and he rather liked it when I would take a "military brush" to it and get it back in order. One of the very last things I did for him when he was alive.
Alluding to the casting in the story I posted earlier in the week ("Like A Friend in the Night"). I know, my traditional a-e is a mink. My mother did see the Furrlough stories I did, and commented (probably accurately) that my paternal grandmother might not have been enthused to have had a minkess named for her (which she was).
