Not to knock any of the other comments that find the sad stuff in a pic, saying "she died and now she's a tree."
Or the way I see it she could have just been a tree spirit the whole time which, is in the shape of a (wolf?) whom walks about and is living. But just goes back to a solid "tree" state as a disguise so others don't know she's alive. And he sleeps under her because he knows she's real and others think he's just sleeping under a ancient animal shaped tree.
Sort of like the ancient Earth spirit scenario where you'd get a glimpse of it from the corner of your eye and when you look to see it, it's not there. :3
Except with her you're literally looking at her. But you think she's just a tree.
