Chapter 20: A Dark Storm on the Horizon.
(Meanwhile, in the Forbidden Mountains...)
Far from England, another sort of nightly activity was taking place. High up the Forbidden Mountains, Maleficent’s minions were going through the large rocky caverns. The captain of the grisly horde, a boar-like humanoid, had received a magical message from their mistress in a green orb of magic which projected her voice.
She stated, “Listen carefully, Captain. Send all the minions to the base of the Forbidden Mountain, the left side where no one sees. In addition, go to my chambers and push the solid black brick stone. It will open a secret chamber where you will find a large mirror. Have the minions bring that mirror to me at the mountain’s base. AND DO NOT LET IT GET DAMAGED!”
The captain did as he was instructed and also made sure his soldiers handled the large mirror with great care. The last thing they wanted was to do was incur Maleficent’s wrath, even if she was just a copy of the original one. It took some time, but soon the entire armies of Maleficent were gathered at the base of the mountain.
Maleficent had supported herself with her staff as the spell she used drained some of her energy. As she saw her armies were with her, she stood up regal and aristocratic as before. The captain noticed the four unusual, shaped gems behind her and could even feel magic crackling from them. And for some reason, something was setting his and his soldiers’ senses off something fierce.
“Captain, did you bring the mirror to me?” Maleficent asked, getting his attention. “Yes, mistress!” The boar-faced captain replied as he saluted. “Come on now, bring it in!” He turned and ordered. “But carefully!” Coming towards her were four foot soldiers carrying the Magic Mirror. Soon, they laid it up and straight for her, and the Witch-Queen examined it.
She was pleased to see there was no crack or moisture on it. It was then one foot soldier spoke up. “Umm, your Highness...” He asked. “What is going on? I feel something bad in the forest below!” His fellow soldiers nodded and murmured amongst themselves for a while.
Maleficent raised her staff slowly and silence fell instantly. She gave off a small but wicked smile. “Be patient, my warriors.” She stated. “I have just performed some unique magic, and truth be told, it has left me somewhat drained.” “Fortunately, I am regaining it and it will be fully replenished come tomorrow night.” She explained.
“However, now is not the time for that.” She added, “Now is the time to tell you all of our new mission.” The horde listened intently, eager to get a chance of fighting. “From this mirror,” she explained, gesturing to the Magic Mirror. “the Magic Mirror once belonged to Queen Grimhilde, has shown me that our enemies are in another land from across the sea.”
At hearing this, the demons howled and groaned! They hated water and would rather die than even be close to it. Streams, springs and small lakes were tolerable at best but rushing rivers, large lakes and oceans...well, there’re was a reason they lived in the mountains!
Maleficent smirked and slammed her staff to the ground hard and as if on cue, a loud howl shook the mountain! “AAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” It was a howl they had never heard before and it silenced the entire armies instantly. They all looked around in fear but found no sign of the source of the strange sound.
“That’s better.” Maleficent spoke, smiling smugly. “Now, as I was saying; our enemies are across the sea but have no fear.” “I have devised a way on how we can cross the ocean without any of you getting wet.” She explained, smiling even wider. “In addition, I would like to introduce our new.... assets to our cause. Hehehe...” Her dark chuckle at the end sent chills up her troops’ spines, wondering what their queen was talking about.
“Um, Mistress...” One imp soldier worked the nerve to speak up. “What are these new assets of yours?” Maleficent grinned. “Oh, not what...my servant, who.” This confused the entire lot as they looked everywhere and saw nothing in the forest or the mountains.
Maleficent then shouted out loud for all to hear. “BACKSLASH, YOUR TIME HAS COME!! SHOW THESE MINIONS THE MIGHT OF YOUR TRIBE!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!” Her staff emitted green bolts of lightning into the air, lighting up the night sky. This made the demons tremble in fear, wondering what their queen was doing.
“AAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!” The same ear-piecing howl echoed throughout the mountains once more...then the mountains themselves began to shake and tremble at the sound of heavy footsteps! Rising from the forest, right before the armies of Maleficient...were the Blood-Moon Monsuno, the most terrifying creatures they had ever seen!
Soaring up in the sky was Shadow-Hornet, the Great Hornet with huge bat wings letting out a loud shriek that sounded alien to the demonic horde. To his right was Spike-Bat, the monstrous four-winged red Bat unleashing a loud screech that send shivers up the demons' spines while to his left was Poison-Wing, the Serpent with large dragon-fly wings on his hood and red glistening scales who let out a hissing sound to the terrified demons.
On the ground from the right was Toxiclaw, the Blood Crab with enormous sharp forelimbs and making a low screeching noise with his manibles. Next up was Fire-Walker, the Great Crocodile with jaws showing rows of sharp teeth which shone in the moonlight. Next was Snap-Claw, the Great Lobster with huge pincers which he snapped at the frightened demons and Freedom-Striker, the cunning Fox who licked his chops hungrily.
To the left was Librax, the savage Blood-Tiger who roared into the night and his red armored body shone in the moonlight. Next up was Twin-Sting, the Spider with her two scorpion-like tails poised and ready to strike. Next was Gold-Spear, the Blood-Wolf with his ebony spikes shining in the darkness and Spike-Lash, the enormous Centipede whose mouth gaped open as if to swallow the demons whole.
Finally, at the center was none other than Back-Slash, the Great Black Wolf himself!! He was the most terrifying of them all, his eyes glowing in the dark and his fangs shining dangerously. When he saw the demons gathered before him, he lifted his head and let out a massive howl at the sky, scaring the hordes witless.
Maleficent's twisted grin grew wide as she turned to her forces. “You see, my pets!” She proclaimed. “Do you see who stands before you?!” “You are in the presence of Back-Slash,” she continued. “War-Chief of the Blood-Fang Tribe and the one who will help us take over the Magic Kingdom!!”
All the demons didn’t say anything, they were all too scared by the sight of the Monsuno. Maleficent couldn’t help but grin in wicked pleasure at their frightened expressions. “Now, gather any and all materials to start construction of a vessel that will take us across the ocean!” She ordered. “You have two days. Now, get to work!”
This snapped the demons out of their shock, and they headed down into the forest to start their construction. Maleficent watched in sick amusement in seeing her soldiers run away in fright from the creatures that she summoned. “This is your army?” Librax spoke up, unimpressed. “Looks to me more like a band of little rats?”
Maleficent turned to the Blood-Tiger. “I assure you, sir.” She replied. “My minions may lack proper appearance and manners but their loyalty and strength in battle are unquestionable.” “Even so, you are free to do what you will to them.” she added. “You are my guests, after all.”
“So...” Shadow-Hornet asked as he landed next to Maleficent. “how will you help us destroy Lok and his tribe?” “In due time, Lord Shadow-Hornet” Maleficent replied, smiling. “I will have to consult the Magic Mirror on our next course of action.”
“Mirror?” Fire-Walker grunted, pointing at the strange mirror. “You mean that little trinket you have?” “This little trinket is how I was able to find you,” Maleficent explained. “and it will give us the power to destroy our enemies.”
Turning to the mirror, she spoke. “Spirit of the Mirror, I have made the summoning spell to bring forth the mighty beasts you have showed me earlier. Now tell me, do I have the strength and power to take over the Magic Kingdom?”
The spirit took a moment before answering. “Tis true, I showed you the mighty beasts you requested for your revenge. But, you will need more hands if you wish to rule the Magic Kingdom. You will need to gather common allies to your cause, gather an army unlike any the Magic Kingdom has seen, and once you have gathered enough forces, the Magic Kingdom is yours for the taking.”
The Witch-Queen eyes widened a bit and a cunning smile spread across her face. “Excellent.” She replied. “This is working better than I expected.” “Now spirit, you shall come with me.” she stated. “You may still prove useful to my endeavors.”
With the last of her magic reserves, she zapped the Magic Mirror which began with shrink in size until it was the size of a compact and it floated into one of her pockets in her cloak. The Blood-Fang Monsuno were impressed; they had never seen this sort of power before.
Now almost completely out of magic, Maleficent sat on one of the rocks nearby. It would take two or three days before she would be back at full strength. For now, all she could do was wait and supervise the work.
“So, what happens next, Witch-Queen?” Back-Slash asked. Maleficent turned to the Black Wolf and smiled. “For now, get some rest.” She replied. “Tomorrow, the real work begins...”
