It was a regular day at the research center. Ashnir sat on his custom dragon-sized pillow, tapping away at his keyboard. He was seated at his large desk, neatly tucked away in his personal office. His office had started being generic, with plain white walls and a white tile floor, but he had made sure to make it more homely with various additions. A couple posters denoting their field of research along with pictures of him and his family. His floor had been filled out by a low maintenance but rare plant and laying some loose carpeting over half of the office.
Ashnir let out a long sigh. It had been a long day. He was in the middle of pouring over the data they had just received back from their deep-space probe. Currently, it was off analyzing the contents of the asteroid belt, trying to gain inside into the various compositions of space rocks that hovered within it. The data was going to help give crucial insight into how their solar system had formed, which would also give insight into other planet's compositions. nonetheless, it was a boring job at times. Mapping out data hour after hour would drive anybody crazy.
He let out a deep sigh and leaned back from his work. He needed something to fill his head while he continued or he wouldn’t make it through. He glanced to the side of his desk where a small black radio sat. It was a standard-issue item with the job and came with his office. Not very impressive, the kind that you would be able to buy in bulk for cheap. He reached out to flick it on, his large claws dwarfing it in size.
Carefully, with the tip of his claw, he pressed the 'on' button. “-the most popular song on the charts right now, coming up next! Space is the place to be – by the moonwalkers” The corny radio show host announced, denoting the incoming song. The moonwalkers were pretty popular right now, they’ve had a big uptick after the recent announcements of more plans for investment in space exploration. There was even talk about the potential for a trip to mars entering the preliminary planning and building stages in the next 10 years, which was exciting.
The music itself was decent, it followed all the main things that popular songs did; standard tune, memorable lyrics, upbeat pace. It was pleasant to listen to, Ashnir turned his attention back to his work and resumed typing. *BEEEEEPPPP* Ashnir almost leapt from his seat, nearly destroying his workspace. A screech sounded out from the radio, completely shattering the peaceful atmosphere that Ashnir had been enjoying.
*BEEEEEPPP* came again from the radio, louder than it had any right to be. He groaned and rolled his eyes. It was the emergency message alert. “I swear, if this is another announcement about dangerous weather conditions in another province, I’m going to throw this radio out my window” Ashnir spoke aloud to himself, settling back down from the earlier startle.
*BEEEEEPPPP* The radio rang out one last time before the announcement began “Over the past 30 minutes there have been multiple sightings of massive flying objects from across the globe. They appear to be of extraterrestrial origin. We remind you in these startling times to remain calm and to not do anything that might antagonize the visitors. As we speak ambassadors to earth are being appointed and dispatched across the globe to make the first contact. We will keep you updated as new information presents itself, for now, everyone should stay indoors. Thank you”. The radio cut dead silent.
Ashnir sat there for a moment, in shock, before slamming his claw not too gently down on the power button of the radio. He wasn’t an idiot. He knew a prank when he heard one. To imagine that aliens would suddenly be appearing around the globe, with no warning? Absolutely absurd. The idea of aliens visiting earth was absurd by itself, but the fact that there was no warning coming from any of the data instruments they had in the lab made it hilariously improbable.
“Don’t they know it’s a federal crime to impersonate an official announcement from the warning system?” Ashnir once again spoke allowed before looking back to his work. Tap tap tap. He tapped against his desk, his mind not fully willing to take in the data before him anymore. He was already in a bad mood, and a prank like that just made it worse.
The light in the room shifted slightly, as the small window he had looking out on the city denoted the changing colours of the sunset. “This is dumb. I’ll continue this tomorrow” Ashnir said, as he got up from his desk and began to pack up. He still had work to do, but there was no way he was going to be able to focus on it. Besides, the sun was setting, and it would be nice to head out and see the colours while he commuted home.
Packing up his gear, he put his important documents away and made sure that his desk was neat and tidy. He turned off his computer and headed out of his office. With a sigh of relief, he locked the door behind him, it felt good to end the workday a little early. He turned away from the door and headed to the freight elevator. It was the only elevator that was actually large enough for him to ride. As per building code, they were also required to have at least one staircase that he could walk down, but it was awkward. He reached the large steel doors of the elevator, a sight that greeted his arrival and departure every day.
Originally the doors had just been a thin steel lattice, but after he had started working there, the safety inspector made a big deal about how they were required to replace them. So the doors were reinforced, changing from thin steel lattice to a thicker steel plate well secured at the sides of the opening. He could still remember the inspector preaching “If a large dragon were to bump into them, they wouldn’t stand up to the force and a horrible accident could happen! Now, everyone is much safer.”
While he didn’t think they needed to go so far, it was nice to have people actually make accommodations for him. So many places just simply weren’t made intended for a creature of his size, so it was always a nice change of pace. He pressed the call button, bringing the elevator up to his level. It didn’t take long, as the building wasn’t that tall.
There were only four floors, three floors above ground, and one storage level below ground. He stepped onto the elevator before selecting the ground floor, waiting patiently as the steel doors slid shut and the elevator began to move. He could always choose the express option, but a lot of the time the doors don’t always fully shut before you started to move. The elevator also speeds up and slows down much quicker, making the journey not as smooth.
The elevator arrived at the ground floor, letting him out into a short hallway that split off into two different directions: one leading back to the main lobby entrance past multiple labs and offices, the other led to the loading bay which he made his primary exit and entrance. He made his way into the loading bay, a large room to allow trucks to drive up and offload supplies. The large steel door that could be swung open made it perfect for him when he wanted to leave. He hit the unlock button and swung the door open.
He stepped out onto the street of the city, pulling the door shut with his tail, allowing it to click shut behind him as the locks re-engaged. He was ready to head home and face the task of commuting his way out of the city, but the sight before him was unusual. The sidewalks were full of people, people standing still looking upwards. Humans, anthros, and every other diverse creature had jammed their way together to get a glimpse at some unknown sight. Traffic had also all but stopped, drivers stood beside their cars looking upwards. A quiet murmur was permeating the strange sight. Ashnir gazed upwards, looking to the sky and taking in the skyscrapers that towered above.
What he saw shook him to his core. A blob. A giant, pink blob, hovering in the sky. It sat suspended in the air, impossibly large above the city. Ashnirs jaw dropped, this was completely incomprehensible to him. He was seeing the view before him but his mind just wouldn’t process it.
The massive blob in the sky almost looked like a giant bean plushie, it had a white belly and a very light pink back. Its light blue eyes stared down from above, giving the people below a view of the blue horns on the top of its head. As the last minutes of light shot across the sky, the orange hues shifted into a deep crimson, draping across the blob and bleeding down against the skyscrapers. The Creature's eyes danced between blue and red as it observed the tiny beings below.
A deep unexplainable chill set over Ashnir. The murmurs turned into loud chatter as people began to find their voices to talk about the sight before them. Ashnir decided that he should head back inside to the lab immediately, whatever monitoring equipment they had inside would be critical right now. He also needed to get away from the sight and clear his head.
He didn’t have any time to move, however, as the Giant creature began to shift. It began to slowly enlarge and stretch as if someone had grabbed onto each of its sides and began pulling. The crowd watched as a mix of amazement, awe, terror, and dread spread amongst them. The blob stretched more and more, getting wider and thinner until suddenly, it split into equally sized blobs. The most terrifying thing came next, as the blobs began to descend down to the city, stretching and splitting into smaller equal-sized blobs as they descended faster and faster. Smaller blobs began to shoot out at high speeds, heading towards the onlookers.
Pandemonium broke out amongst the crowd, as people began to scramble to getaway. People shoved their way into stores and buildings, shoving their bodies through windows if they couldn’t get in through the door. Anything they could do to get away, to hide. Ashnir turned and lunged back towards the research center, quickly punching in his 5 digit passcode, breaking several of the buttons in his frenzy.
Thankfully the door accepted his pin and the loading bay door popped open once again, allowing him to barrel inside. He turned and grabbed onto the door and went to slam it shut, but before he could the sounds of a crash rang out before him. Dust and broken debris from the concrete sidewalk and asphalt were launched out. A blob had very violently landed on the road directly adjacent to the building right where he had been watching from. Its emotionless blue eyes gazed directly at him, completely unblinking, the stare burning into him.
He swung the door shut with a bang, the locks automatically clicking. Ashnir turned tail and ran down the hallway, storming into the freight elevator ready to choose his next destination. An explosion rang out behind him as he reached for the panel. The loading bay door flew off its hinges as the blob moved into the building at a slow and steady pace. It hovered slightly above the ground making no noise while it progressed towards him. Ashnir almost screamed and hit the storage button along with the express option.
The freight elevator began to move immediately, wasting not a single second before beginning its descent. the large steel doors began to slowly slide shut, giving Ashnir a view back at the creature while he descended downwards. his heart filling inexplicably with dread as with his last fleeting glance its near featureless face shifted into an evil smile. The journey was short and within the longest 5 seconds of Ashnirs life, he had reached the underground storage level. He bolted out of the elevator, moving at lightning speeds as he began to punch in the access code for their storage vault, a surprisingly hefty door that kept their confidential items secure.
The door to the vault promptly swung open but not before another bang and crash could be heard behind him. He turned and through the still closing doors of the Elevator shaft he saw the remains of the reinforced steel door slice down from above. Completely blown off the wall of the upper level it cut into the floor where he had just been standing, destroying it and sending the cabin crashing downwards. This wasn’t just a leisurely chase, if Ashnir had been a couple seconds slower he wouldn’t be breathing right now. Ashnir entered the vault and slammed the door shut hitting the lock button. The sound of the bolts of the door sliding into place and securing the room gave him a moment to relax and take a breath.
And then, blackness. The power had gone out, leaving him alone in the dark in the basement of the research facility. His heart quickened again, causing him to try to feel his way around in the dark. It was pitch black, he couldn’t make out a single detail of the room with his eyes. He brushed past the various shelves filled with papers and valuable equipment, slowly making his way deeper.
Reaching the end of the room and bumping into the wall, he realized that he didn’t have anywhere else to run. Feeling around, he discovered a rather hefty desk next to him. It felt like his heart was going to burst from his chest. He needed to take a moment and calm down. So he laid down behind the desk, trying to hide and breathe calmly. A few breaths were all he got when the sounds of bending steel and shearing metal screeched through the room.
Ashnir froze, silently praying to whatever gods that were out there for protection, clamping his eyes shut hard. He knew what that sound was, it was the sound of the giant vault door being ripped apart, removing the last solid barrier between him and the creature save for the desk. But the utter silence that permeated the darkness following was what broke him.
Seconds passed, and Ashnir couldn’t stop breathing so heavily, his heart pounding as his entire body trembled. He held his breath, trying to make as little noise as the seconds passed. How long had it been? It felt like an absolute eternity, as he laid there. At last, he couldn’t take it anymore and he opened his eyes. The moment he opened them, from among the darkness, a pair of glowing light blue eyes appeared in front of him.
He screamed.
And then…
Blackness.
