Pira's self-esteem took a hard hit from Scar's deception (or rather the fact that he was smarter and more cunning than herself)... But, alas, she did not draw the right conclusions from this ordeal. Instead of admitting to her mistake, she nursed a grudge against the rest of the pride, driving the final nail in the coffin of her relationship with the other lionesses. The subsequent stress affected her pregnancy, and Pira ended up giving birth prematurely. To twins: Sheru and Shayena. The cubs were very weak, though. Something Scar, who did, after all, show up to see his progeny, pointedly told Pira. Yet the lioness once again fell to her pride, insisting that she's perfectly equipped to deal with this difficult situation all on her own, thank you very much. She didn't allow anyone to see the cubs and would go out hunting herself, ignoring the help of other lionesses and leaving the little ones unsupervised and without a source of warmth for long stretches of time. Weakened from a difficult birth, she could barely procure enough to feed herself. It figures that she ran short of milk, and one of her cubs, Sheru, began to wither and fade. Little Shayena turned out stronger and more resilient than her brother, and by the time she was exploring the Royal Cave and acquainting herself with other cubs, her brother lay motionless for days on end. Pira ignored her pride mates' questions about the state of her son's health, allowed no one near, and by the time she finally came to her senses and called Rafiki for help, it was too late.
