"Yikes"? That's kinda rude. And $40 isn't the highest I've seen for a cel-shaded commission with background. (Yes, it's a simple background, but there was still no need to have one.) Next time an artist tells you their price and it's too much for you, try saying something like, "Oh, thanks, but I'm not looking for a commission," or, "Oh, I can't do that, sorry, but thank you," or even just ignoring the price altogether and saying something like, "Ah, thanks for letting me know!" Or, heck, you don't have to respond at all.
