I am completely addicted to this 'pets in historical getup' thing. It makes me laugh. This is my lion fish, Brian, masquerading as Copperhead Leader Henry Morrison!!
The Copperheads were a 'political organization' (i.e.- group of crazies,) that were very outspoken against Lincoln, the civil war, emancipating the slaves, and a host of other things that were either beneficial to humanity or an unfortunate nessacary in that political climate. Henry Morrison was known for not showering, carrying a cane with a carved copperhead on it, making racist remarks, and basically demonizing everything Abe Lincoln did. He lives on in the hearts of today's tea baggers, as they share several common sentiments. Mostly the racism one. There are several similarities between him and Brian- they are both prickly, unfriendly, and very aggressive. Brian is also probably a conservative, although I'm not sure. He gets irritated when I watch NBC, but I'm not turning it to Fox to see if that would mellow him out. He just has to learn to live with it.

You can find some really great refrences online! Also, this is what I did- the shakespeare theatre company employs one of my college friends, and they let me peek into their costuming department. Sometimes theatres or museums will sell off some of their older stuff too, and you can take close up looks then!
Oooh, thank you for the idea. Seeing it in person would really help me. I am finding I have difficulty with photo referencing things, for some reason. It can help... but I find that I absorb what I need to much better by interacting with something, or just inspecting it closely. For example, we got a new[ish] kitty recently when my boyfriend's father passed away - she's all fluffy, and just being around her has really helped me grasp how better to draw "fluff" and to a lesser degree, flow of hair and such.
