Crouton, like Napther, has large spikes on his back. Like for like, Crouton's are bigger. He probably tripped over a stack of containers and landed on his back, and now he's mired in the soft sands.
Or he liked the big, flowing waters and decided to take a quick bathe to wash off the sand in his scales.
