Depends on the exact nature of the situation...
I know a few baddies who'd have much more fun keeping the prisoner alive to torment indefinitely. And others who would invalidate my previous post by having an hour glass with more sand than one bulb will hold. And a couple of non-baddies who'd do something like this as a prank and totally not have enough sand in the hourglass, but not divulge that until it's run out and only up to the individual's chest.
