RPG stuff: Mhar South Varia map
For various reasons Greg hasn't been publishing any new Mhar game books for a while though he has a number of game notes and a number of half-finished to near finished maps of various locals in his game world including a number I've been working on with him. I got permission to post a few of these maps if nothing else as an excuse to get him going back to finishing these off. One map we were working on was sadly lost when my old computer packed it in and we'll have to dig through old notes to rebuild it.
This map connects to the north end of Anaeland map in the Kingdom of Anaeland book and the core Mhar Fantasy books (now out of print). The Kingdom of Averne lies east to this map (with portions shown on this section).
The bottom region is a region known as the Broken Lands because it is ruled by robber barons and filled with old plundered and haunted ruins the largest of which is Remanus, Mhar's version of Rome, which fell in the dark ages to an undead horde.
Along the coastline from the Broken Lands are the Varian City-States, basically the continent's version of Italy, made up of minor states that are vying for dominance over the region. Highhaven is somewhat unique among the Robber Barons in that it was founded by Annish Freebooters and has an agreement with both the Avernese lords and the rest of the Broken Land nobles to ensure the overland caravan road remains open and clear of bandits. As expected it boasts a huge inn.
Massea is known as the City of Towers since the powerful families have fortified palaces and many merchant clans have a fortified tower to retreat to in times of strife (which haven't as common as it once was to their relief). The state is ruled by a coalition of powerful merchants and local noblilty while the lesser offices in the city are passed between various citizens on a year-to-year basis as part of their civic duties.
Varia, known as the Golden Republic and the City of a Hundred Canals (and a Thousand Knives) is ruled by a Grand Duke who is elected from the Council of Eighty (the Senate, made up of the wealthiest families in the State). The city is built on a group of islands in a lagoon along a marshy section of coast where it was a refuge from barbarians and Thindor invaders during the Dark Years. It is the most powerful and wealthiest of the City-States but prefers to maintain the status-quo than conquer its neighbors.
Milos is most aggressive of the states currently, currently engaging in a war with its neighbor Velogne. Like Massea, it was once an oligarchy with a lower rung of offices that were given to citizens for a year to run through lots (with no citizen allowed to hold an office for three years after completing a stint). Now it is run by a pair of brothers who led a military junta and seized control of the city, running it as a military dictatorship. Rumor has it that the brothers had infernal help.
Velogne is another republic though it also has a lot system for minor public offices; the city is famous for its schools including a magic academy.
Izelhelm is an autonomous region home to hill dwarves and their irksome goblin neighbors.
