Cool! I didn’t think anyone would talk about Family Ness to me. I only remember seeing the opening theme and part of a episode years ago. But that was all I saw of it. Interesting they made a show of Loch Ness monsters with limbs. It really gave me a Plessie vibe when I first saw it. I even liked the design, especially the feet. Really similar to how I like to draw Plessie. Kinda took it from Dragontales too.
I didn't grow up with it myself (I think it was a UK only cartoon?). I just happened to randomly find out about it some years ago, through some fan art. I looked into it and watched a couple episodes just out of curiosity. Of course I'm far too old of an audience for it now, but I think I would have really enjoyed it growing up since I was obsessed with the Loch Ness monster. I quite like how you draw Plessie!
Plessie’s species is unknown for now. Super Mario Wiki used to say nothosaur, but changed to “officially referred” by Nintendo as dinosaur, but designed after bipedal nothosaurs . I put that in quotes because in-game nowhere is said about Plessie being a dino or even a species of sorts. It’s likely they’ll call the species Plessie eventually as they did with Dorrie in Odyssey. Both Pless and Dorrie are based after Nessie, though Dorrie is actually a plesiosaur, despite the fact Plessie gets the name from that. Pless resembles nothosaurs more. Maybe Iguanodon too. With that, Pless and Dorrie should also not be dinosaurs cuz plesio and nothos both aren’t dinosaur species. It be nice if that is official as it make them more different from Yoshi.
Oh yeah, I definitely know the inspirations. I was just musing over how there surely must be more than one of Plessie's species (whatever it's officially called) in the Marioverse, even though Plessie is the only example we've seen. I'm hopeful that Nintendo will use Plessie and/or it's species again some day in the future, the same way they did with Dorrie in Odyssey. But sadly you never know with Nintendo.
That last part is very true. They did bring back Plessie better, but there's still concerns. The gender of the main Plessie, species, if see more than one, how will they differ? Will Pless get more forms? I really hope Pless gets to be in a new game cuz then that means a new model to work with that is easier for modeling. Unfortunately Plessie also didn't get new renders or 2D promotional art. Just a NES sprite that is great, but someone who's a Plessie enthusiast sees an error in eye color. His eyes are shades of teal, but NES sprite is blue. I hope they fix that in the future.
