RPG stuff: Mhar Kingdom of Averne
I completed this map for Greg a number of years back and parts of it appeared in The City of Aquile sourcebook.
This map connects eastwards to the South Varia Map (overlapping along the left hand edge) and covers the Kingdom of Averne. It has a similar culture to medieval France and while there isn't a Hundred Years war, there is a weak king incapable of settling the numerous border disputes between the various counties and lords and so there are large numbers of freebooter mercenaries and sell-swords from all over the continent looking to make their fortune here. Aquile, on the northwestern border, is called the City of Roses both for the flowers that grow there as well as being famed for its minstrels. It lies across from the Free Counties and the Malevistan Forest, a fragment of the Grimwood that once dominated the Medimere region that had been twisted by Nicilan and Fey Enchantments (there's a long story about that which was covered in the Kingdom of Aukland book). Needless to say the forest is nasty with unseelie fey, werewolves, ettercap lurking there but there is a safe road through the forest that is heavily traveled as merchants travel to Harvonne the City of Fairs. The forest is said to have ancient Nicilan ruins hiding within it and is said to be home to a power fey lord known as the Prince of Hail.
In addition the Kingdom itself, the map shows The Donation Lands, a semi-autonomous region ruled by the Church and home to its Pontiff. Peterpetra is called the Holy City and the big center of pilgrimage that sits on an island in the middle of a shallow bay (think of a cross between the Vatican and Mont-Saint-Michael complete with tides). Not all of the area is safe as there are rumors the hills and moors that border Averne is haunted by a Death Knight and his undead followers.
Mandebourg is an independent castle town manned by knights and soldiers drawn from across the northern continent to guard the pass into the Saramyn Empire. The Empire is based on the Byzantines and like historical Earth, they follow what might be considered "Orthodox" teachings, effectively making them heretics in the eyes of the Church (the Saramyn patriarchs in turn believe they are the true church and the Pontiff and his clergy are the heretics). Of course a lot of trade move through here and the road tolls are rather pricey.
Rhodez is the kingdom of the gnomes and is a major center of commerce but also jewelry and mechanical wonders. Think of the Swiss, except they live in Denmark and they're four-foot high and live for 150+ years... and they practice polyandery (that is, to counteract the imbalance in the sexes, gnome women can have two or three husbands).
