to be fair i never understood why would anybody wear sandals on an hike.
Aside that everything will poke you on the feet...
...in that everything there is a lot of dangerous animals that you would need to be careful of...
...or they will sting/bite you. Italy is famous for a lot of venomous critters.
Vipers, scorpions, etc.
Sooo... uh... good luck.
But yeah, they rarely (if ever) are fatal.
You usually just end up a lot of times with a swollen foot...
...aaaand can't walk for a few days due to pain.

How many?
Because i was still rushed to the hospital for not heeding what my Boy Scout trainer told me and wearing only a single pair "but it was really thick" ™
I assure you every time i see a german with sandals and socks i sweat cold because i know what happens if you are not careful.
Leather or even that weird spongy stuff some shoes are made of usually works.
Even tall socks with long trousers worked (once). So 2 socks ove over the other should work.
Socks alone... definitively not.
Might be because i live in the country, but i was bitten 5 times the only time it went through was when it hit the socks.
The other times i noticed because people told me i had an "unlaced boot" and i looked down to see i was "trailing snake" 😅
Sooo yeah... please take care and do not get bitten, i assure you it is not pleasant.
More so with me because i'm alergic to one of the most common analgesic and there were only 2 other options, one of which i could not use due to the poison.
As i said... as far as i know people rarely die of this... but you will definitively remember it if you get bitten even once 😅
Aaand if possible i'd like to spare you having to do that.

In this case it was enough. That mountain is usually cold and damp, so there aren't issues with scorpions and snakes. Good soles are way more important, most accidents stem from... Actually, people being utterly stupid and taking selfies at ludicrously dangerous places, or trying to go downhill with their bikes, but the accidental-accidents are people slipping or keeling over due to overexertion/lack of oxygen.
Other summits more south may be a wholy different story, but I wasn't there yet

oh... yeah.... i just assumed you were not one of those people and was worried about the problems that might arise in the stuff you said.
I apologize if i assumed too much (in both cases).
Buut yeah.
On average in such days those critters are sluggish.
But... you know... it's nature. If it's about screwing with people: nature... finds a way.
Also: yeah.
If you do not have proper boots: the grip is more important than the rest, i agree with you on that.

in this one very context my hiking sandals were the better choice, as they have fantastic grip. Bugs and scorpions aren't as much an issue on a cold, damp, mountain.
They also do provide ankle support, because it's german hiking sandals. The hiking shoes provide more ankle support, but their soles weren't as good and I needed the absolute best grip available.
