In this case, it may not entirely be brainwashing, so much as his mind being unable to handle the memories as it regressed. He is essentially a baby right now, after all. My guess is when the time is right, the dragon knight will be given a choice, alongside his memories and the truth of what really happened, so he can make a proper informed decision.
