Mouse and I have talked about building a home for a while. The style will depend on where we end up buying land.
Some time ago I found this pdf of a Contemporary Carport, Shop and Storage. The footprint is 20 x 32 feet. Now if you do a little playing with the concept say deepen it from 20 feet to 40 feet that would give us about 440 square feet of floor space on the main floor. Depending on how much loft you add you could about double that. The extra 2 carport spaces can be used as cover patio space.
But as Mouse and I have gotten older going up and down stairs has become a bigger issue. So I taking this building shape concept and expanding it a bit. We both like the idea of a loft for a second bedroom or a craft space so we will see where my fuzzie mind takes this.
For those of you who think 440 square feet of floor space is small for two people, Mouse and I called a 32 foot RV home for seven years till Mouse move to Seattle for long-term medical care and to help out a friend of ours that needed help. Anyway our RV has about 250 square feet of floor space...
We will see how things play out for us. I'm going to play with a few floor plans and sizes. What does this mean for you? Why, you get to see my crazyness with my architectural ideas and skills.

I have always questioned this sort of house plan myself. I even lived in something similar as a kid. It is, essentially, a live in carport. 90% of the people who live in something like this realize after a few years that the 19 year old Ford Taurus is not worth having that much under roof space so they enclose it and make a nice den, home office or bigger living room out of it. These sorts of floor plans only make sense if your area is prone to flooding. Also, those steep roof angles are murder on interior space for little gain unless you anticipate a lot of snow loading. Nothing like having no choice but to put a couch against the wall only to find you have to stare down at your lap because the angle of the wall hitting your head. A-frame houses are the worst.
A lot of stupid house designs (not saying this stupid, a few tweaks could fix it right up) in the 1970's and 1980's came from architectural magazines where students would draw up house floor plans for class and then the schools would gather them up and sell them. The first McMansions were derived from these.

I have always dreamed of a small house with a turret of several floors. the top floor would be an open area, but with a roof. it is possible to put a telescope there, or a small ballista. (depending on what purpose) and on the floor below is a small office with a table and chair and a bookshelf. possibly large windows. I'm a cat, and I love height)
