The "black" shown here is more like a charcoal grey, which is fine, or true black can be used, depending on the medium I suppose. I tend to avoid true black for fills when drawing is all, since my lines are usually black. The brown in the eyes can be darker as well, that's just the darkest brown my Photoshop palate had.
