“At fraction twenty-one of the battle, the Terran force disengaged with losses and left the system,” Dorvan n’Lanya said, and the recording of the battles off Kirnakir and Tlath paused. “I ordered a pursuit, and although I wanted to lead the operation I was overruled by Frelen l’Schan, who correctly reminded me that my assignment is to defend the Home System.”
The Imperial Heir was in formal uniform, with Admiral l’Schan seated beside him; a few paces to their right sat the High Admiral and her civilian counterpart, the Minister for War, and facing Dorvan across the holographic projection was his father.
Tarval XXI was wearing a severely plain dark blue uniform, bare of adornments save for a small representation of the Imperial Seal on the left sleeve. It was the uniform of Supreme Marshal, the Sovereign’s only rank, and it drove home to the younger kam that he could not appeal to his father, because in a very real sense his father wasn’t sitting there.
His plan and actions were being examined by the High Admiral and the Minister, but he would be judged by the Sovereign himself.
The Minister asked, “Did you have a contingency plan in place for defending Gwath ka-shlal in the event that the enemy force managed to get past your force at Kirnakir?”
“Yes, sir,” Dorvan replied. “The forces that met the Terrans near Tlath had been assigned there as part of my plan. I had additional formations located elsewhere in the system.” The kam considered this before gesturing to the High Admiral.
T’Klar adjusted the jeweled stock collar of her formal uniform. “Admiral,” she said to him, “what were your losses?”
“Two light cruisers lost, with two more damaged; ten destroyers lost,” he replied.
“And enemy losses?”
“Three Terran cruisers and one battleship destroyed or heavily damaged, and eleven destroyers destroyed. We took two hundred nineteen prisoners.”
“And the Terrans abandoned their attack, and left the system.”
“Ulnt, Garfrelenvī.”
T’Klar shifted slightly in her seat to face the Sovereign. “My Lord, our review and questions are over.”
“Assessment?” Tarval XXI asked.
“I conclude that Frelen n’Lanya acted appropriately. His plan was a good one, and he retained enough flexibility to counter unexpected or unusual moves by the opposing force. This was his first non-training combat encounter, and I would recommend that Frelen l’Schan continue as his mentor until this conflict is over.”
Dorvan started counting heartbeats as the Sovereign gazed across the intervening space at him. He had only rarely seen his father like this, and it had always been aimed at someone else.
“I concur,” Tarval said, and Dorvan resisted the urge to sag back in his chair. “Frelen-niret n’Lanya.”
“My Lord?”
“Remember this lesson.”
The Heir sat up a tiny bit straighter. “I will, my Lord.”
“You and Frelen l’Schan are dismissed.” The two kami stood, saluted the High Admiral, bowed to the Sovereign, and left the room.

Admits his errors and credit to those who correct him. Something I've seen in far too few people I've had to deal/put up with.
