That unfortunately was my very first experience with VRChat, too. I was rocking Cyberwere's "Zeus" wolf, dropped into a wold, and immediately had some young kid threatening to kill me and all other furries.

Meanwhile, all of the conventions I've attended had closed-off worlds that you could only enter if you registered for the convention, then joined the Discord. With the exception of Furality Online Experience, all the cons were free. The exception further to this was Furnal Equinox, but while the instances were public, the Discord maintained a master list of VRChat profiles who were listed as disruptive, crashers, or threatening. Blocking them made the convention experience that much more enjoyable.
