A short song I wrote for my friend Alleged_Chicken on Twitch. I asked them what kind of music they'd want if they could have custom-written music for their stream, and this rustic kinda vibe is.... more or less what they asked for, kinda.
They're not on FA even though they are kinda a furry. But they ARE one of my best friends and they're just a fantastic person, so check them out on Twitch if you want — https://www.twitch.tv/alleged_chicken
I'm kind of torn. On one hand, I feel like I keep writing the same piece of music over and over, using the same chords, patterns, and tropes. On the other hand, I'm not a professional composer in any sense, and I just do this for fun so... who cares if my music is cliché? I mean... I care, but I'm starting to think that maybe I worry about it more than I need to.

Thanks Velz!! That is indeed a flute you're hearing at 1:02! I took inspiration from the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess opening sequence for that and, admittedly, I'm really happy with how it came out.
I'm thinking that, eventually, once I've grown tired of using the same patterns over and over, I'll naturally just start trying new things. Maybe I just haven't written enough to get tired of 'em yet. That's my hope, anyway. :P

Thanks so much! I've never played Undertale but jeez, I might as well have lifted the guitar part straight from that song lmao. I love Pete's Song too, especially with those soft vocals! It has kind of a melancholy vibe to it and, now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind hearing more about the implications and lore behind it, especially given that it comes for a battle royale game of all things. Context is often a big part of why I like my favorite songs, so... well, my curiosity is piqued! Feel free to send me a note if you want. :P
I usually try to avoid thinking about specific composers or other pieces of music when I'm writing — with the occasional exception — much like I used to avoid using references when drawing, because I felt like it was "cheating" somehow. But you've got me thinking... When I draw with references, I learn so much more — and so much faster — than I ever could just drawing what's in my head. I wonder if the same applies to music. Like, obviously I don't wanna lift passages straight from other people's music, but maybe I could stand to benefit from trying to recreate what others do just as a personal exercise, maybe analyze how they convey certain moods and ideas, and then adapt that for my own writing. I dunno. I still feel like it's... toeing the line of plagiarism, y'know? I worry that I'd end up overstepping or making my music TOO similar.
...Of course, as you've just shown me with that Undertale song, it's startlingly easy to just straight-up copy a song you've never even heard, so maybe I'm overthinking that, too lmao

Love this song, it really puts you in a good mood!
I get where you're coming from on the topic of inspiration. I'd say if what you write makes you happy that's all that matters, loads of composers write pieces that tend to sound the same.
A neat trick for coming up with something new is to take something you like (a musical style, scale, whatever) and try and combine it with something else you like.

Thanks! I'm glad you like it! :D
Yeah, I suppose there's no harm in writing what I like, necessarily. But it means I end up with a very narrow range of musical styles I can create, and that's no good if I ever wanted to, say, take commissions or something... Which, granted, I don't see happening anyway. But it's never a bad idea to expand your skillset, right?

I agree.
It's true you run the risk of writing in just one style if you just write what you like. I'd suggest then maybe try mimicking something in a certain style, just as an exercise. It could help give you new ideas you can incorporate into your music in the future.
Thanks for the watch btw!
