Wepwawet looked up from the readouts on his small screen. Far from ideal the primitive computer systems had given him data he had to translate twice to get anything meaningful and once more to get what he actually needed. His attention immediately fell on the hanging mechanics and steel of his suit’s right arm and melancholy slammed into him like missiles. It was a wreck. Bullet penetrations, heat wounding, blast scarring in places so subtle it was almost unnoticeable. But he could see them well and the fact it got through the thermal coatings was pain on a scale that made his broken arm seem a mercy. A million thoughts crashed through his mind at the white noise of comically primitive acetylene welding equipment and those same thoughts were broken by the sound of rancorous, borderline mocking laughter that boomed over it like falling sandstone.
His attention rose to the source of both sounds and he beheld the huge hyena woman who had agreed to help him. She worked with a pace that showed passion she was obviously keeping hidden to seem tougher. Her name was Roxanne and she was the best mechanic Wepwawet had ever worked with. When it came to heavy affairs, anyways. But she had a knack most lacked for all things that worked and ran on fuel, which was all he asked for. What he didn’t ask for was the reason for her laughter. Sparks leapt from the metal as she cut steel then stopped as she lifted her visor. In a mimicked accent clearly making fun of his own she said “‘Oh, I don’t need your help, I can take whatever he throws at me’!” She laughed, pointing down to him. “Three!” She raised an equal amount of fingers. “Three men in Carrion pattern suits was ALL it took! Ha!” Her single bark devolved into another laughing fit. Wepwawet grimaced at the continued banter. Her words hadn’t stopped since she dressed his wounds, as if she’d known he could take it while wounded. But now that he had shown his toughness to work with broken bones and sore legs she had let fly. “‘My suit is the pride of my people, and the technology beyond yours.’” She laughed again and Wepwawet turned his nose down, starting to get a little upset. He wasn’t offended as she’d been banterous before but hadn’t been this hefty with it as of yet. “You know that Carrion suits are scavenger suits right? Hell I can run them over in the Matriarch! ‘The pride of Cairopia’.” She shook her head and looked down at him.
She saw then that he was blushing rose gold against the black of his fur. His ears were a little tilted back and he was looking at the floor. She could see she’d upset him. In that moment her smile faltered and shifted slightly. “Oh come on.” Her tone had changed to much more welcoming. “I guess this bucket of rust isn’t that bad. You took out two of them right?” Wepwawet looked up at her but didn’t move his head in effect giving her the puppy dog eye stare. He couldn’t really help it and she rolled her eyes, knowing she was weak to it. “Fine. It’s not a bucket of rust.” She chuckled and pointed at him with the torch. “But you are a dumb dog.” That got a chuckle out of Wepwawet. She’d called him that when they first met and she flashed that toothy smile down at him. He’d only seen it falter once and that was when she pulled him out of his mech in the desert. But he liked her smile and he wondered if her banter was a sign of friendship or a tell of nervousness. If it was the latter she’d never admit it. If it was the former though, she’d keep doing it until it was obvious. Her ears perked. “Ah, so he CAN laugh! You’re a tough crowd. Ya damn dog.” She said before laughing and flicking her welding mask back down and getting back to work. For a brief moment Wepwawet felt content here. He smiled briefly as he sat there on a dead end world in someone else’s garage with a broken arm. The camaraderie was foreign to him and his silence was surely awkward but she still made him feel like family. Like they’d been friends even though they really hadn’t known each other long. For a moment he kind of liked it here on this sand strewn backwater world. Though water was scarce and his company could border on rude he hadn't seen so much color from people in an age. This felt...casual. Which was alien to him. A small smile came over his face, which he was quick to hide for fear of being made fun of. With his slight grin at an angle she wouldn't see he returned to his work, hoping the repairs lasted just that much longer.
