I almost exclusively use one pen tool, and now am putting in an extra brush tool for shading, but there are a lot of resources on custom brushes out there that may help with texturing fur/feathers. If I ever mess with them, it will be after I feel more comfortable with general forms/shapes first, but you might get more use out of them.
