I would like to try this one.
A few fond memories - we used to pull into Halifax to fuel up before going out on patrol. In the early 70's it was a nice little town, what of it I saw (mostly the bars).
Propellers - my Great Great Grandfather was a steamship captain on the great lakes. I found, through a newspaper article of the times, that ships were called 'screw ships' or 'paddle ships'. He was a survivor of a ship that burned. At that time I think he was Third Mate.

I'm trying to figure out which type of ship it was, as screw ships have a big propeller and are steam powered. I assume this is the one you're referring to, as the other paddle is a large water wheel popular on the river.
It's funny to think that less than 2 hours would have put me in the heart of Halifax. No bar trips during my time in New Brunswick, but there are some stories from Winnipeg.

when steam was first introduced to ships, they were all paddle wheelers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Great_Western
there was a story on how they decided the 'screw' was superior by having a towing contest, hitching a screw ship to a paddle wheeler, and of course the screw ship won.
Oddly enough, my Great Great Grandfather joined the Union Army and not the navy. He returned from the war ill and died later of the illness. That's about all I know.
