Chapter 22: Morning Plans
As the morning sun rose slowly of the Kingdom of Sennin, its warm rays spread across the village, rousing the townsfolk from their night’s slumber. The rays slowly reached to the castle, where the servants were busy preparing everything for the royals.
Grimsby was looking over today’s schedule, Chef Louie was making breakfast and Carlotta was helping the maids to clean up the downstairs washroom. They wanted to make sure all the royals’ clothes were nice and clean for the day.
Speaking of which, the sun’s warm rays reached the room of a certain princess and her friends. Melody flinched when she felt the sun’s rays hit her face. She turned over, grumbling a bit. “Not now, sun.” She muttered. “Five more minutes...”
Suddenly, she stood up in her bed, realizing it was morning. “Morning already?!” She thought to herself. Instantly, the memories of last night’s events flooded into her mind. This was her chance to meet her new friends, the Monsuno of the Blue-Moon Tribe!
Seeing the other girls still fast asleep in their sleeping bags, she carefully got out of bed and tiptoed to her dresser to get some clean clothes to wear for the day. After she got what she needed, she quietly closed her dresser drawers and made a beeline for the door.
Just as she was about to reach for the doorknob however, a yawn filled the room and she felt someone looking at her. “Good morning, Melody.” Tracy spoke, smiling wryly at her. “Getting dressed to meet our ‘guardian angels’?” Cinderella’s daughter had already woken up a bit after Melody since she was used to waking up at early hours like her mother.
Her voice was enough to stir the other girls from their slumber. “Hey, what’s going on?” Ping groaned. “Melody was trying to sneak out so she could meet our new friends.” Tracy replied, smiling at the flustered reaction on Melody’s face.
“Aww, no fair Melody~~” Luciana whined as she and Kathrin stretched their limbs. “We want to meet Lok and his friends too...” Melody smiled in embarrassment. “I’m sorry.” She replied, her cheeks red. “I’m just want to know more about them!” Her tone became more excited. “Where they come from, how they got here, I want to know everything!”
The other girls smiled, amused by their friend’s eagerness but it was Ping who brought it under control. “While I share your enthusiasm,” She explained as she stretched her arms a bit. “we need to be clever about this.” “If our parents find out about them, who knows what they will do them.” She warned. “Not everyone will believe monsters like them are friendly.”
The girls immediately saw where Ping was coming at, if their parents and the villagers saw the Monsuno the wrong way, it could lead to a battle that could get ugly or graphic quick. “Ping is right.” Malak added. “We need to plan a little and tell the boys about what we should do next.”
“I’m sure we will be fine.” Dianne replied. “As long as we have faith and a bit of luck, we can understand more about Lok and his Tribe; and maybe even help them to fit into human society.” “It’s a long shot, but we should give it a try.” The rest of the girls nodded, agreeing with her plan.
Melody thought on it for a moment, before nodding with determination in her eyes. “Well, why don’t you tell us of this plan while we change?” She suggested.
(An hour later...)
Everyone was at the dining table, the adults all ready and dressed for the day. The children too, had already washed and bathed in the numerous bathrooms located around the palace. Some towels and fresh clothes were in small bags on the living room sofa.
Shortly after the girls were dressed, they told the boys about their plans which they immediately agreed to. Now, all of them were seated with their parents and ready for breakfast. Chef Louie and several servants came in with trays brimming with food.
There were fruits of many kinds like bananas, pears, grapes, apples and oranges. Some carried pitchers of fresh milk and freshly squeezed orange juice and others carried steaming hot plates of scrambled eggs, sausage links, pancakes, waffles and others. It was a delicious-looking spread and the children’s mouths watered with hunger.
“Everyone, breakfast is served!” Chef Louie declared proudly. “Enjoy!” The children quickly took whatever they wanted from the plates while their parents looked on in amusement. It seemed that going to bed last night with only some fruit had made them hungrier. Soon, the adults took what they wanted and the room was soon filled with small talk as the royals ate.
Ariel turned to her daughter who had just finished her glass of milk and asked. “So Melody, do you and the others have any plans for the day?” “Oh, me and my friends plan to explore the village before we head of to the beach.” She replied. “Dad, is it alright if I could take some money just in case we want to buy something from the village?” She asked her father.
Eric thought for a moment. “I don’t see why not.” He replied. “After breakfast, I’ll give you a pouch of 50 gold coins.” Charlie spoke up. “Eric, when should we leave for the forest?” He asked. “The others are more than ready to help if we can locate the rest of the bandits.”
The fathers were still concerned about what else happened last night and they wanted to know how it involved their children. Cinderella was a little uncomfortable talking about bandits, so she decided to change the subject.
“So Melody,” She looked at the princess and asked. “are you excited about your birthday tomorrow? How old will you be again?” Melody smiled. “I’m going to be thirteen years now, and I’m really excited for my birthday.”
Melody was indeed excited about her upcoming birthday party, but secretly, she hoped that on that day, she would introduce her new friends and hopefully...they would be accepted. Until then, she would do what she could and hope for the best.
“Mom, what about you and the others?” Tracy asked. “What will you be doing for the day?” Cinderella smiled at her daughter. “Oh, we’ll be staying in the palace to help prepare for Melody’s birthday, and we’ll probably go shopping in the village.”
The children were glad to hear it; their parents will be preoccupied while they were outside. Soon all the food was gone and the children shot out of their seats so they could go out through the door. “Hold on, all of you!” Eric called out, making them stop in their tracks. “After what happened last night, you all won’t be going to the village by yourselves.”
Philip joined in as he got up from his seat and walked towards the children. “Eric’s right.” He added. “Until the issue of the Red Devils has been cleared up, you will be escorted by some guards.” This got an immediate response of protests and complaining from the children, knowing that soldiers would spell disaster for their plans.
After some time, Eric stepped up and raised his hand for silence. “Children I’m sorry,” He replied. “but my decision is final; it’s the only way to keep you safe.” At that moment, Kathrin strode forward, her head held high and sure.
She spoke to Eric and Philip softly. “Your highness, I think that is a good decision. But instead of many, how about just two guards?” She asked. “Surely two of your best soldiers can handle children.” Everyone was surprised by Kathrin’s suggestion, especially her parents. She was usually a shy girl and never seen her speak back to adults in such strong yet soft-spoken tone.
The two kings thought about it for a moment and realized that the princess had something. Eric smiled as he looked at Kathrin. “Very well, Princess Kathrin.” He replied. “Two of my best guards will do, thank you for your suggestion.”
Kathrin smiled as she bowed a little to Eric. Turning back, she saw the glares and scowls from her friends. She walked past them and when she was near the front door, she slightly motioned with her head for them to follow.
The others were a little confused by this but decided to play along and followed her. Once outside, Mainard hissed to Kathrin. “Kathrin, what were you thinking?! Giving in and agreeing to Melody’s dad on having guards to be with us?!”
He wasn’t the only one; Edgard, Luciana and Garrick were a little upset by her actions but the others, particularly Melody, Ping and Tracy felt there was more to her deed than she let on. Kathrin sighed. “I knew we could not sway our parents from not letting the guards be with us,” She explained. “so I thought it would be best to have the minimum number of guards as possible.”
“We promised them that we will have escorts with us,” she added. “and now...” “Now, we have only two guards to worry about,” Melody spoke up. “and we can come up with a plan to stall them long enough to see Lok and his tribe!” “Kathrin, you are a genius!!” Kathrin blushed in embarrassment at Melody’s compliment and Edgard found her expression rather cute, much to his own surprise.
“I think we have the perfect plan...” Malak added, grinning. “My brother and I would always do the same thing whenever we wanted to escape from our tutors back at home.” For a moment, the children stayed outside, listening to Malak’s plan and discussing about it when the front doors opened and Eric came out with two royal soldiers.
“Children, meet Godfred and Nicholas...” Eric stated. “Two of my finest guards and your escorts for the day.” The two royal soldiers bowed to the children as they nodded back. “Dad,” Melody asked. “can we take one of the royal carriages?”
“Of course, sweetheart.” Eric replied, making his daughter smile brightly. “Thank you, dad!” She stated before heading to the stables to get Tempest. Godfred went with the other children who followed Melody. Nicholas turned to his king and saluted. “Don’t worry, Your Highness.” He stated. “The children are in safe hands with us.”
“I’m counting on that.” Eric replied. “In the meantime, I’ll have one of the captains interrogate Shadow-Sneak. I want to know what he knows before he is taken to trial.” “After that,” he added. “me and my friends will head into the woods where we found the children, and see if we can find the rest of the bandits or...anything else that may have been out last night.”
Nicholas nodded before heading to the stables. Eric sighed, feeling that something was amiss. There was something that he didn’t understand, something that made him feel uneasy and wondering if today was going to be productive or...chaotic.
“I have a funny feeling that Melody and her friends are going to give Nicholas and Godfred a hard time today.” He thought. “I can’t shake the feeling that something is off... I just hope I’m wrong.”
Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, Eric headed back inside with the rest of the adults to make sure everything for Melody’s birthday party tomorrow would proceed as planned.
