Here we have my very first reference sheet done of my Komodo Dragon, whose name I've been using for almost 20 years now. He is a space cop, marine sniper, ship's gunner, and the head of security for his organization's flagship. He began life on a MUCK called Furscape, a play on words to the TV series Farscape, which is set 300 years in the future with humanity having wiped itself off the map. Earth is irradiated due to World War 3 and completely lifeless.
The artist and I did some brainstorming for this one, and came up with the torso design featuring a mixture of human and animal, though the ribcage was kept to the animal's characteristics. The darker coloring is scaled hide, while the lighter coloring is soft, vulnerable flesh. Due to being a Recombinant, meaning having human and animal DNA, the flesh is as soft and vulnerable as a human's. Further details on how this splicing came about will remain lost to time The legs are an anomaly from the animal kingdom. They are an interesting mixture of digitigrade and plantigrade and was taken from a stock photo of a Komodo on its hind legs with its tail arched up and behind it, only to be visible in it's shadow.
For the tongue we went with something akin to how it may look on the lizard but I could find absolutely no references to just HOW it looked due to all the mouth shots having very, very little lighting. The teeth are sharp and pointed, but we opted not to show the serrated edges even though they exist. The venom was likewise left out since there's nothing being bitten. For speech it will be similar to how we talk, with the forked tongue being used quite effectively and without the characteristic lisp most want to associate with serpents and snakes. The Glottis is present, but may or may not be in the correct spot. I see WAY too many people stick the tongue down there when it shouldn't be! That's the breathing tube when the creature has a full mouth, people!
His weapons of chose here are the Katana and his trusty sniper rifle. Unknown to most, his rifle has the capability to transform between this and other types of weapons on spoken command. For the ammo all he needs to do is state what he wants it to have and it will be done. This is similar to the Judge Dredd universe. The inscriptions on the weapons are both from the Lakota Native American Nation. The firearm is for Strength / Power and the Katana is to Strengthen one's self and persevere. Fitting, no?
The small medallion is actually a frontal view of the Katana looking down the blade at the base of the hilt.

10-pack abs sure add to the lanky look yet give quite a lot of strength to the torso. Exotic muscle anatomy also showing it's quite a different creature and evolution from earthy reptiles. Quite a lot of bifurcation to the tongue tells me it's designed for more than just tasting the air, perhaps an appendage of manipulation as well? Seems he's built well for rapid locomotion on all 4s and comfortable enough in bipedal stance as well~
No to the tongue. The Komodo Dragon can extend its tongue quite far from its snout, and the fork itself is a whole foot from the tips. If memory serves the extension can be up to five feet in length.
As for the muscle definition, the skeleton of the Komodo was kept for the torso as far as how far down the body it goes. I think it covers the stomach completely when compared to the human skeleton. He can shift easily between locomotion types when required. Even the ordinary animal can do so even when not engaged in wresting for dominance. Also, the anticoagulant venom is still present, and since they seem to be immune to each other's venom I think he'll be able to chew his food without problem.
The NSFW version has a couple more blatant differences for this character.
