Trying something new again. Recently I do a lot more layering when it comes to the drumming and I think it really improves the way it sounds.
Also, I have access to more drumsamples, so there should be plenty of material to shape and add texture to things.

thy! ^^
I always worked with the misconception that layering kicks and snares would make the sound muddy and undefined quite quickly, but it turns out you can layer quite a bunch without it becoming problematic. Now I just take a snare I like, think about what I would like to be different about it and add snares to it that have those qualities. Probably the simplest trick in the book that everyone uses, but I guess I just never gave it too many thoughts ^^' Much happier with how my drumming sounds now. Next big construction-site for me is adding variation and in general more soundeffects and "earcandy" to my tracks.. that might take a while to get better at though x) I think I'll try doing sounddesign sessions where I record interesting stuff to use in future projects.

well, resonant and energy rich frequencies tend to fight for space in the spectrum. depends on what you're working with though. you can easily cut out certain parts or ranges and, as you said, combine it with other samples. iirc noisia said that their sound improved once they started treating lows, mids and highs separately. this applies to almost any sound, be it sustained notes or percussive hits.
I'm excited to hear what you'll come up with :)
