As Leostar stood in front of the incredibly floral and ornate altar, he couldn’t believe he was there. No one else could, either, as far as he knew. Who’d have thought that the adventurous Leostar, who had more intimate friends than there were stars in the sky, would ever settle down with one man? Not he, that was for certain. But then again, he remarked to himself, it was impossible to anticipate love. Sometimes, it came and left casually. Other times, it came to stay but changed into something else. And sometimes, it was clearly so precious – even more precious than the jewels in his hair – that one had to reach out and grasp it. This was the way he felt now. This was the way he felt about Steve.

The caiman looked absolutely dashing in his suit. He wore an artificial dreadlock from a choker around his neck to symbolize his commitment to an echidna, just for the ceremony, along with the flip-flops that Leo had requested. (There was no need to be too fancy, the smaller man had reasoned.) Looking at his coworker now, Leo was hard-pressed to think of even a single man who could be more handsome – even in the abstract. When the two of them joined hands (Steve’s hands were so big and warm…) in front of their assembled friends and families, the Trooper’s heart raced beneath his tailored purple tux. Within moments, he marveled, the two of them would be joined forever. Sprouting wings and flying away seemed less fantastic and wondrous.

As the union was officiated, neither of the grooms seemed to hear any of what was said, having eyes only for each other. Nevertheless, both somehow knew when it was time to give their vows, and they collectively swallowed hard.

“I do – for forever and always” Steve declared when asked if he would take Leostar. “If I could live a second life, I’d give that to him, too.”

Leo had to fight back tears when asked about his own convictions.

“Yes… Yes…!” he said, trying to speak up even as his voice cracked. “I’m going to be his, for as long as I live. I promise.”

The expression of utter adoration that Steve directed at him nearly undid Leo, who was glad when they were bade to kiss a moment later. It let him blink away his tears inconspicuously, as he whimpered happily into his new husband’s mouth. It was the best day of his life.
