what part do you generally start drawing first?

a shape for the head, or a circle for where the head is going to be. then add the facial features onto to that. Otherwise it'll end up wonky and with no structure!

that's a good plan. In my case though, I find that building the head around the features gives me a waypoint to build off of, since the features are what I picture in my head the most clearly. But I still like using guidelines for bodies if I'm doing foreshortening.

ah i see. usually i find the face might end up uneven or weird if its built around the features. usually to help, you add a little "cross" to the face that wraps around the head, with the center of the "+" in the middle of the face. Its hard to explain but you know, those guidlines to tell you which way the face is going. that way you know what spots to put the features! but whatever works!
