Chapter 23: Village Shopping
The little town was bustling with activity, adults were working their daily crafts for their patrons while others were chatting with their friends while strolling. Their children were enjoying the weekend, playing games with their friends in the town square.
It grew more lively when they saw two royal carriages rolling into the square and everyone turned to get a good look at the royal children inside them. Melody smiled and waved to the common folk while many of the citizens bowed to her, shouting “Good morning, Princess Melody!” or “Good to see you again, Princess!”
The citizens also waved to the other royal children, who waved back and smiled at them. For Mainard, Edgard and Azad’s case, they sent charming smiles to some of the pretty girls who all gave happy sighs. This made their egos swell a little, while the girls especially Tracy, Kathrin and Ping looked a bit annoyed.
Godfred and Nicholas had the carriages stop near the town square, putting the horses and the vehicles to a spot where it would not bother the residence. When the children got out of the carriages, Nicholas turned to Melody. “So, what do you all plan to do now?” He inquired.
“First, we are going to explore.” Melody replied. “After we are done, can you take us to the beach on the western side of the palace?” She had known of a secret, out of way beach that was out of prying eyes thanks to a small cliff that jutted out from a certain spot over the beach. It would be perfect to meet the Blue-Moon Tribe that hopefully were there.
“Very well.” Godfred replied. “But, keep in sight and don’t do anything reckless.” Sadly, telling a ten-year old child not to do anything reckless is like telling the sun not to rise. The children just nodded their heads and smiled, and for some reason, it made the guards nervous.
As the kids walked into the center of the town square, they were quickly surrounded by children of all sizes, shapes and ages. Many had not seen other royals besides Melody and her parents, and they wanted to know more about them.
Became Eric’s castle was close to the sea, many people from many walks of life settled here. There were whites, blacks, those of Spanish blood and descent, and from many other parts of Europe.
Eric and his family were renowned for respecting other customs and people, as long as they didn’t bring harm to innocents or break the law. The children were amazed to see the various kinds of people crowding around them to see or talk to them. Melody waved, shook hands and welcomed those that greeted her.
And it was the perfect diversion. With some quick thinking and reflexes, with a touch of luck, Melody, Azad, Malak and Kathrin managed to squeeze through the crowd of children and gave the soldiers the slip. Once they hid behind a building, Melody turned to the others.
“Okay, we need to make this quick.” She explained. “Me and Azad will head to the butcher to get some meat for Lok, Long-Fang, Boost, Glow-Blade, Mystic-Force and Nite-Stone.” “Malak and I will get some fruit for Clubber, Batteram and Charger,” Kathrin added. “and perhaps some fish for Evo, Sky-Fall, Quick-Force and Deep-Six.”
Azad nodded. “We’ll meet back at the carriages once we have the food, so the guards won’t suspect anything.” Nodding to one another, Melody gave Kathrin and Malak directions to the fruit and fish stands before they all went their separate ways.
The others watched them go and all gave a knowing smile. Now it was their turn to play their part. Dianne and Luciana turned to the children. “Excuse me,” Dianne asked. “but are any of you up for a prank or two?” “We would like to give our escorts a little exercise for the day.” She explained
The younger children were a bit confused, but the older ones smirked widely. They were known for giving their parents some little migraines for the trouble they stirred up, though nothing serious or extreme. One boy, a twelve-year-old of African descent inquired. “What do you want us to do?”
Mainard, Edgard and Garrick smirked and replied them with something that made all the children sport evil smirks on their faces. The guards saw the children huddling together, and Godfred asked his friend. “I don’t like the way they’re huddled like that. They’re planning something...”
“Come on, Godfred!” Nicholas laughed. “What chances of them tykes getting the better of us.” He got his answer when the children exploded from their huddle and went a little crazy!! Soon, the two guards were surrounded and were spun around every which way. Godfred saw Dianne, Edgard, Jin, Luciana and Radelle go off in one direction while Nicholas saw Mainard, Tracy, Ping and Garrick went off in another.
The group of kids spilt up to join one of the royal groups; and groaning in annoyance, the guards chased after them. Though they were well-trained and had strong endurance, it was hard to keep up with children who seemingly had boundless energy and seemed to be leading them on a merry chase. The villagers and some bystanders watched in amazement and a bit of amusement as the children led the town guards through the town, their laughter echoing throughout the streets.
As the chase continued, Melody and Azad had made it to the butcher’s stand. The owner, a man of Spanish descent named Miguel greeted. “Good morning, Princess Melody! How may I be of service?” “Morning, Miguel!” she replied. “I would like seven large-sized packages of your best meat, please...”
Miguel looked surprised. “What for, princess?” He asked. “There’re for some friends of ours...some large friends.” Melody replied, smiling innocently. Miguel was a little skeptical, but didn’t question her further.
“Okay then,” He said. “seven large packages of my finest cuts coming right up!” “Normally, it would be 75 gold coins, but for you Princess, I say 40 gold coins as payment.” Melody was relived since she only had 40 gold coins from her father. Soon, she and Azad were presented with seven large rectangular packages of fine cut beef wrapped in paper.
Taking forty gold coins from her pouch, Melody paid Miguel and after a bit of a struggle due to the weight and quantity, they managed to carry them. He asked if they needed help, but they politely declined. “We got the meat.” Azad spoke up as they left the butcher stand. “You think the others will successful?”
“I hope so...” Melody replied as they carefully made their way back to the carriages, making sure the guards didn’t see them.
(Meanwhile, at the fruit stand...)
Kathrin and Malak had just finished purchasing the fruits like bananas, oranges, peaches, grapes, mangoes and apples. Luckily for them, they each had 50 gold coins from their parents. Kathrin bowed her head to the owners. "Thank you for the fruits." She spoke. "I'm sure my friends will enjoy them very much."
The owners smiled at her politeness as she and Malak took their orders and walked back to the town square. However, they slightly panicked when they saw Godfred coming up. Quickly, they hid as the poor guard was being turned and twisted by the village children. Although they hid well, they were spotted by Edgard and Ping.
Making sure that Godfred was still well distracted, they went over to them. "Do you have the fruit?" Ping asked, which Malak nodded. "We do," She replied. "but it will take too long for a second trip to the fish stand since we're carrying too much stuff."
"Ping and I will take the fruit and keep the guards occupied." Edgard inquired. "You two go to the fish market and after we have the fish, head straight to the carriages. We'll meet up with you later." "Thank you." Kathrin replied. "but don't let the guards see the bag."
Edgard grinned. "Don't worry, Kat." He assured her. "I won't be caught so easily." Kathrin blushed at his confident smirk, feeling her heart beating a little faster. Ping and Malak smirked wryly, clearing noticing their friend's reaction.
With the bags of fruit in their hands, Edgard and Ping leapt back into the fray and distracted Godfred long enough for Malak and Kathrin to slip away to the fish stand.
(A few minutes later...)
Melody and Azad were waiting for Kathrin and Malak at the carriages, looking around hoping to find their friends. "Don't worry, Melody." Azad assured her. "I'm sure they'll be alright." "I hope so..." Melody replied, a bit worried as she made a small prayer. "Please, let Kathrin and Malak be okay."
Her prayers were answered when Kathrin and Malak emerged from around the corner, each of them carrying four wrapped packages of fresh fish. Melody smiled widely and waved at them, with them smiling back as they ran towards them.
"You got the fish!" Azad exclaimed, making his sister smirk at him. "Was there ever any doubt?" She asked mischievously. "What about the fruit?" Melody asked. "Did you get lost?" "Sorry, we got a little twisted around somewhere," Kathrin replied. "but some villagers were kind enough to give us directions."
"Also, Edgard and Ping have the fruits." she added. "We just need to wait until..." At that moment, the sound of children was coming their way followed by loud orders and complaints from two guards.
It was Godfred and Nicholas and they were on their way back to the square! The royal children held their breaths, hoping that Edgard and Ping will appear. Imagine their relief when they arrived, coming around the corner with bags of fruits in their arms.
"Hey, everyone!" He asked, smirking. "Did you miss us?" Melody rolled her eyes in amusement, but Kathrin giggled, her cheeks red. "Are the fruits all in one piece?" Malak asked. Ping and Edgard opened their bags and sure enough, all the fruits were okay with not a single bruise on them.
Melody quickly directed the others to the carriages, where there was a secret compartment underneath the seats, where guests could store valuables or weapons in case of emergencies. The children packed the food into each carriage just as both groups were coming in.
The poor guards were looking ragged and a little worn out while the kids still had plenty of energy. As the guards recovered and gathered their bearings, the royal children gathered together again.
"That was fun!" Dianne whispered "Melody, this has been the most amazing time I had!" Luciana giggled. "Garrick and I did the same thing back in Corona," she added, turning to Melody. "Have you done this before?"
It seemed all of them clearly enjoyed leading the guards on a whirlwind chase. Melody was glad to see them having a good time and made a mental note to do more with her new friends. But right now, they had a promise to keep.
The royal kids turned to the village children and thanked them for their help. One village boy replied. "Thank nothing, this has been the most fun we had!" "If you ever need a prank like this again," he offered. "let us know!"
With cheerful waves and friendly goodbyes, the village kids and pre-teens dispersed back to their parents or to their games. When Nicholas and Godfred arrived back to the carriages, they were surprised to see the royal children, all accounted for and in good health.
Melody and all of them gave innocent smiles. "We're done here!" Melody inquired. "Shall we go to the beach now?" The guards looked at them before groaning, realizing their mission was not going to be an easy one.
