Following in the footsteps of it's competition, the then owners of Daiei decided to bring back it's biggest star. Hiring then up and coming director, Shusuke Kaneko, Gamera was reborn.
Making his big come-back in 1995's "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe", Gamera came back in a big way, gone were the zany antics, as well as the "Kennies", of the Showa Era, and in their place was a more serious tone.
Gamera was now the ancient creation of the Atlantean civilization, his species made in response to the threat posed by their previous creation, the terrifying Gyaos. Sadly, despite accomplishing what they were created for, Atlantis still falls regardless. But not before sending this lone Gamera into a dormant state, should the next generations need him.
That time came in the mid-90's, when the Gyaos emerged once more, woken by the actions of man towards his environment. Seemingly sensing this, Gamera slowly made his way towards Japan. His presence does not go unnoticed by Japanese officials (he almost sinks a naval ship carrying plutonium). A science team tries to study his shell, finding weird runes, as well as tons of comma-shaped beads.
One of the chief scientists gives one of said beads to his daughter, Asagi. Unbeknownst to anyone but herself, this bead creates a spiritual link between her and Gamera.
The giant turtle finally makes his move the night the military tries (in vain) to trap 3 Gyaos hatchlings in the Fukuoka Sports Dome. As the plan goes nose up, Gamera attacks his mortal enemies, disposing of one as it flees. The other two escape, with Gamera following in pursuit, taking to the sky in his "saucer form".
As the days pass, Gamera manages to kill the second Gyaos as it terrorizes a mountain village. But by then, an ignorant Defense Force (still on orders to help preserve the Gyaos, who were being percieved as an endangered species) tries to kill him. Thus, as Gamera was busy licking his wounds, the final Gyaos was allowed to continue developing into it's full grown form. This now stronger beast attacks Tokyo, getting the best of the military's efforts to now destroy it.
But hope was not lost, as Gamera soon returned to the fray, and the battle began anew. Powered by his connection to Asagi, Gamera eventually comes out on top, killing the dreaded monster and saving the day. Tired and weary, Gamera quickly makes it's way back to the ocean.
He would soon return in 1996's "Attack of Legion", in response to the appearance of a dangerous alien insectoid species, the Legion. These creatures prove more than a match for the giant turtle, especially their gigantic queen, who easily overpowers the turbo-powered terrapin. Gamera almost loses his life in the process, but barely manages to come out on top, battling the Legion Queen to a standstill.
But even with all his amazing abilities, Gamera was finding himself on the losing end of the battle, so he decided to utilize a last-ditch attack against this dire threat. Tapping into the mana-stream of the Earth, Gamera unleashes his most devastating attack against his opponent, a powerful beam of pure mana energy that obliterates the Legion Queen.
But this action comes with a cost, for having utilized so much mana energy, it further effected the Earth's environment. Thus in 1999's "Revenge of Irys" more Gyaos, thousands of them, are unleashed upon the world.
Having severed his connection with Asagi during the fight with the Legion, Gamera became more and more violent in his pursuit of the Gyaos, leading to more casulties as he no longer seemed to go out of his way to protect humanity like he once did. This in turn led to more harsher attitudes towards him by the human populace. During all of this, a mysterious tentacled creature, dubbed Irys, emerges from a cave. Fueled by an ancient hatred of Gameras, it draws the mighty turtle out.
Their fight becomes more chaotic and brutal as it soon moves towards Kyoto. Injured and mangled in the process, Gamera barely overcomes his new nemesis, killing Irys in a fiery climax. But it is a seemingly hollow victory, as thousands upon thousands of Gyaos descend upon the city. Regardless of his wounds, Gamera goes to meet this new threat, not hesitating for a second.
And with that... the series was ended on a cliffhanger.
There was a little-seen fan film made in Japan that tried to continue the story, but it is (obviously) not considered official canon.
This Gamera has many fans, as it's stories, effects, and production values were top-notch. Considered among the best of the Kaiju Genre. It brought Gamera out from under Godzilla's large shadow, and made him an honest-to-god competitor.
