My Trip to the USAFAM: M7 Howitzer Motor Carriage
Gonna do a small group of pictures of my recent trip down the road to the United States Army Field Artillery Museum in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. This will not be as many pictures as Artillery Park which is the outside portion of the Museum simply as many are just.... not as interesting in my opinion compared to the collection outside yet some of them inside are much cooler.
Here we have the famous Howitzer Motor Carraiage M7 "Priest" originally built and designed on the chassis of the Medium Tank M3 Lee this is a later version built on a Medium Tank M4 Sherman, this can be seen in 2 places, the use of the "Heavy Duty" bogies with the return roller over the rear wheel of each bogie compared to the center on the original. And the single peice transmission housing on the front instead of the 3 price used on Lee's and Early Sherman's. With an off center M2A1 105mm Howitzer this limited the weapons traverse to the right which do to the longe range nature of Artillery did not prove as large an issue as you would think. On top is a Browning M2HB .50 Caliber Machine Gun on a flex mount on a 360 degree ring for local defense against lightly armored vehicles, infantry and low flying aircraft.
