I think it's less about him being stupid and more about him being not especially good as a trainer.
He's definitely not dumb. Rather, he's been incredibly naive and imperceptive. He had this overly glorified idea of what being a trainer was like and didn't really examine what went into doing so. He's earnest and well-meaning. He even has good insights and ideas at times. But he's not good at conveying them and is absolutely TERRIBLE at instilling confidence in his team during a battle.

Waaaait, didn't they already get rid of that head-ghost alternate self as q charmander? Because if its still around that's just more reason to distrust Aodan. Anyways I hope he just up and tells them 3verything so they can turn him back already, everyone screwing with his head has kinda ruined him staying as 9ne for me. No use being a pokemon if others are going to mindscrew you into becoming them.
