From a evolutionary standpoint, it makes no sense to have a predatory animal that folds its facial skin back as a threat display. I could maybe see it as some sort of weird vulture-like scavenger thing. But hey, in D&D, evolution takes a back seat to the rule of cool - ask the insane wizards who came up with the bullette, owlbear, and other fan faves - and skull-faced critters are cool-lookin'.

I played one of these as a character once. i came up with a horrible thing i would do to my party where i would stick my face in the water and then put my skin back on over my head so it was filled with water and then look all bloated headed and then squeeze the muscles in the skin to play super soaker with the water trapped under it
