what's what I love about MD music first and foremost. It's distinctive sound. Some might call it tinny but that's only the bad soundtracks and really there are a good number of those as with any console.
to me alot of the nes and snes soundtracks are very corny and midi-esque (in the bad way). A comparision I like to make is thus:

even though it's not a legit MD song, I think it gives a good view on what I mean.

Absolutely - a lot of people I know talk about the SNES's sound hardware being technically superior (which it is, unarguably) but... that Megadrive mockup in the second link had me literally going "Oh, yes!" as soon as it started :) That... sharpness of the rock instruments comes with an instant ton of nostalgia for me, of nights playing Super Hang-On and Road Rash 3...
