I can attest to this, and I'm not from Canada. Went to Vermont for skiing and such and got a taste of the real maple syrup. One taste and I looked to my folks. "Mom, dad, this is maple syrup... What the hell is that Aunt Jemima crap supposed to be?!" I only resorted to the imitation only as a last resort afterward.
