This is his future self, who has been keeping Motherdear occupied so she doesn't go to Kiyanti and try to micromanage the wedding preparations. He received a call from Captain Wylde about the Czhokulas being held aboard the Dominator, and lied to his mother about it, telling her that Wylde wanted a refit on the Loweza to spruce it up for the wedding. Then when she commented about how expensive it would be to do that, he suggested they go to Monaco to look at buying a new boat to replace the Loweza.
He's trying to prevent his mother from hearing about the duel, and the danger to her "investment" that it posed. So he's been keeping her away from media for the last few days.

Thank you for explaining to us FA onlys....The difference in hair length can be explained by the simple fact that he's literally a different Fred (even without time travel involved). Does this mean that the woozy feeling he's going through means that the altered past is starting to catch up with him? Sort of like how in Back to the Future, it took a while for Marty's actions to alter his timeline (ie: his brothers disappearing in the photographs)?
Although the hands that are right behind him may suggest he's been drugged and about to be dragged.... which admittedly carries a different meaning if you think about his longer hair for a bit too long.... (second pun not intended.)

I think of "time travel" like overwriting a program on a computer. And also like those old departure/arrival boards in train stations, with all the little tiles that would click and clack and shiver as the entries were changed. It takes a little time for the wave of the effect to catch up. Fred's mother notices that his hair suddenly looks longer, and two seconds later, forgets about it. Fred, as the time traveller, can remember how his past ran, but he also gets new memories from what his past self does.
But Present Fred has almost caught up with Future Fred by now. Future Fred prompted them to leave two weeks earlier than planned, so they would arrive in Kiyanti before Jinjur's assassination plot was ready to go. About three weeks have passed since they left New Yak. And with Jinjur under arrest, it looks like Future Fred has succeeded in derailing the plot which, in his time line, killed Kathy and Sandy (and probably Songween," threw the country into civil war, and had him taking the blame for it.

So, now we (FAers) will have to wait and see if this means he goes "poof" or discovers a new history, thus (by the laws of the soap/drama troupes) MORE Problems they'd have to solve....
Although, based on how you described it, would mean that after this point, he'll have no more memories of the future and (in order to maintain the time stream) will have to send Present Fredy to the past as he (Future (about to be rewritten) Fred) stays. Or else they just *Shrooomph* into just one being as their timelines are literally one and the universe cannot allow the paradox to exist....
Wow, I think too hard about this stuff....

If Fred is at point A, and point B, at the same time. Then someone is playing with the timelines.
If this is Fred Prime, Then this is the main timeline. Or I should say this 'WAS' the main timeline.
Even so. The merging of the two is not complete as long as Fred is outside the timelines.
