I was going to colour this properly but then I suddenly got really sleepy ... so perhaps another time. For now the sketch and some base colours.
I drew this from memory at first, scary how well I memorized this image.
Kudos if you know which Dragon Quest game this is from. Good memores, good memories.

I believe 4 was an experiment in casting off the shackles of the standard JRPG at that point. Later on, all their games started to use that format; actual characters. It revolutionized the jRPG! ... But 3? DQ3 was awesome because it was awesome. You ever level up an entire party of merchants just to abuse their money-after-combat thing? <3
Lets not forget the sage class - when well planned - was capable of completely owning the game. Of course I had two of them in my party.
I think I only used a merchant on my first play through - because of their appraise skill. Still didn't stop me from equipping cursed items when I wasn't paying attention X3

At one point you need to go grab a merchant to finish a quest, if I remember correctly; the one where you build your own town!
I couldn't do it because my copy had a dead battery. You have to power the game down completely after saving for a 'day' to go by, I thought, so the town would never be made. D:

The town construction thing started in III, I think, or maybe even II. Then kept going as a staple in the series. I. Hate. It. So. Much. Especially in DQ7.
I remember at one point fighting stuff on the ocean in DQ3 that had a spell that knocks party members out of your party completely. I never raged so hard. >=(

Oh yes I remember that too ... bloody hell. I was worried I'd never see them again the first time. Also DQ had the wonderful 'oopsie you crossed a bridge you shouldn't have, here are enemies 20 levels above yours' mechanic. But somehow, even the raging makes it better these days.
I've made a point out of ignoring town building in most RPGs. Breath of Fire being another prime example of town building I avoid.
One of my fav bosses in DQIII was the wishing dragon though, with the amazing option to wish for naughty books |3 good times.

I don't remember that boss! It must have been further along than I had managed to make it. I remember a cave in the clouds with super-tough enemies and tons of instant-death attacks. D: Breath of Fire had so much potential... I lost track of the series at around 3 or 4, when they introduced that profession system that influenced your character's stat growth. I haet that.
Then I heard one of them actually penalized you to the point you'd lose the game if you used the transform mechanic. Weaksauce, man.

That boss was after you'd become the Hero of Loto, dragged your ass through an impossible long dungeon into the holy kingdom of something rather then climbed the tower of pain. Nah really. He was the final, final boss, allowing you to resurrect your father as well. Fun times.
Breath of Fire I, II and IV are awesome. III needs to die, I *hate* the game and that's saying a lot as I love this series almost as much as Dragon Quest. V was actually really fun, just not when you're from Europe, they took away or soft save and to save the game you needed save tokens ... which you had to find. I think I raged so much with the game. Perhaps it was my own fault, but I wanted to finish the game on my first try (you could 'restart' with your current stats at any point in the game but noooo, I just had to finish it in one go).

New Game+ used to make me addicted to JRPGs. c_c Chrono Trigger especially, what with it having a ton of different endings with a few *requiring* New Game + before you could unlock them.
Was BoFIII the one with professions? I hated it. Except when that naked goddess punted the gargoyle guy in the junk. I did *not* see that one coming.
Man, fuck limited saves. I mean seriously. Save tokens? D:< I don't even like them in games where they vaguely have an excuse being in [Some survival horror games? Don't play them much anymore, they have crappy controls almost all the time].
P.S. you need to do a group pic of your friends dressed up like DQ classes. That would be so cash.

Chrono Trigger was awesome <3 I'm so happy to have it on the DS now (even through I'm really pretending that extra ending never happened). Still one of the best RPGs ever made. Kitty count ftw X3
I don't recall any BoF game having professions but it's possible that was III, I played that for 20 hours then tossed it aside because the characters were dull, the story was dull and everything was dull. Even the refs to the older games were dull, I mean WOW, that takes skill.
Only Vethrid likes Dragon Quest :< all my other friends scoff at it - they're Final Fantasy fags. Perhaps I'll just open it up for people here, give some back to mah watchers who enjoy this game X3

Don't give me choices oh god oh god I'm going to seize up and spend the next few hours deliberating. I didn't like their chapter either. ANNOYING. My god. That cave where you need to get the thing at the bottom? Before you pick up that melee NPC guy, you're stuck with a pair of *mages* ffs. Not cool, man. Not cool.
The worst worst part about Taloon's scenario? He *sucked* until you got him leveled up a bit, so half the time you're getting your butt kicked by slimes. Oh yeah, and if you get that iron safe item that protects your money when you die you can't get it when you start the fifth chapter. D: D: D:
The Kitsune village was pretty funny, though, I thought. x3 I hated foxes back then, sneaky bitey little devils. Also, having your own store was fun until the novelty wore off and you spent half your time gambling for coins to buy metal slime crap so you could yawn through the game...
... This is the longest comment thread I have ever seen that isn't drama.

Don't remind me of that, it was a case of 'two steps out of the village, encounter, go back to heal - repeat'.
Oh yes I remember the Kitsune Village, that was quite funny. The whole sandwich making each morning amused me as well.
I think I was rather impatient back then because I wanted to play with my hero character and didn't care about the background story of my other party members that much. I never bothered with the store ... finishing the game with crap gear and in no time at all. I should revisit it again.

I remember she got really mad if you didn't come home in time, too. That amused me for some reason. Also, managing your boss's store was uuuugh. x_x I remember renting this game, then getting really sick iRL. Then I had to tear my NES apart and weigh down part of it with a globe to get the game to boot properly. Also, a piece of the insides melted itself off, so I had to find a junked NES at the dump and salvage parts from it. >.> <.< Now I'm curious about the PSX remake, if there's a translation patch or no...
Just get the DS remake, it's excellent. The remake on the PSX is *awful* simply because of the retarded long loading times like all ports had back then.
But wow ... how did you manage to get your NES to break down like that, those things were made out of plastic looking titanium I swear!

They were certainly a pain to get open, especially when my age was still in the single digits... >.>; And then under the plastic there was a metal casing around the whole damn thing, too. In the end I had to keep the top off for it to work, for some strange reason.
And yes I tried blowing on it! ;3
