“So you wanna join the Mud Men Crew, huh?” The leader barked at Adam.
Adam stood at the border of the mud pit, dressed in nothing but a pair of underwear.
“Yes Sir” he spoke confidently.
“Good, well if you want to earn your boots, you need to prove that you can handle yourself in a sticky situation” the leader explained while locking Adam’s wrists behind his back in a pair of leather cuffs. “Similar to how you’d have to prove you can tread water for 10 minutes before they’d let you swim in the lake at summer camp... only this ain’t summer camp, boy”
“Yes Sir. I’m ready to prove myself”
The other members cheered and hollered from the nearby mud pit, where they wrestled amongst themselves and watched the initiations of the newest members.
“Alrighty, on the count of three, you’re gonna get messy!”
“Thank you, Sir” Adam replied.
“One”
Adam took a deep breath, he’d been eagerly awaiting this moment for weeks.
“Two”
Adam looked down at the praline-coloured mud pit beneath his bare feet. The muck seemed to bubble in places that he hadn’t noticed before.
“Three!”
Adam felt a sudden jolt on his shoulder as the leader pushed him forward towards the gooey mud.
Adam’s legs slid into the muck with his ease, he heard it squash and squelch as he sank deeper and deeper.
“Remember, you’ve got to fully submerge and get yourself out in 20 minutes, or you’ll have to try again tomorrow” the leader chuckled, “and if after your third attempt you can’t get out, we won’t be pulling you to safety.”
“I can do this, Sir” Adam replied confidently.
He remembered back to how he heard about the Mud Men Crew back at his college dorm, he begged his friend to let him tag along and prove his worth. Adam wasn’t going to let anything stop him from joining the crew.
Adam’s shoulders were now sliding beneath the creamy mud when the leader towered above him. He placed his boot on Adam’s head. “You need to go all the way under, are you ready?”
Adam looked up at the leader.
“Yes Sir”
The leader began to push down with his boot to help Adam fully submerge under the gooey muck.
