There was a lot of backstory involved with Angel and Arich, involving another girlfriend Arich had known for years; other characters piled assumptions onto their relationship, and then when Arich suddenly "clicked" with Angel, there was some surprise and a bit of resistance. But Angel would have a high "cool factor" and win people over.
