Chapter 23: Rampage
Kate and ‘The wind’ were perched on top of a ridge overlooking what looked like a vision of hell. Arrayed out in the valleys before her was fire and smoke, explosions and mayhem. She couldn’t see clearly enough for the distance to see individual soldiers, but she could see the general troop movements and the projectiles of flaming stones their catapults threw back and fourth. They were near the edge of the kingdom that she had once served, and had captured Lex the first time, and was more than likely behind this second capture. It looked like the king was trying to expand his territory, marching his army and war machines upon the forces of his neighbors. She counted herself lucky for not being able to see the individual soldiers dying or hear the screams of the men.
What she could hear was the roaring.
“Is… that noise is that?” She turned to the wind, who had taken on a much smaller form, the swirling leaves and dust was still in the form of a wolf, though now it stood only a head above her rather than a colossal beast multiple stories tall.
“War is there” it replied.
“Lex…” Kate whined, “That’s him making that noise. What are we supposed to do? We can’t just walk into a battle field we’d die… er I’D die anyway. and you… a tornado might cover our approach but it’d be a bit much just to talk to lex, not to mention that… with the people down there it…”
“It would kill them”
“Ya … that... I don’t want to be killing.” Kate shook her head, “but I need to get to my mate somehow.”
“Then what?”
“What do you mean ‘then what’ you leaf pile?” Kate almost shouted, “save him, rescue him. get whatever control magic they have on him off and run away again, back north. To your lands. That’s where we were going in the first place.”
“War was bringing you to us?”
“Well yes. His original home, with the other gods like you” Kate waved at the ethereal wolf, “Somewhere we’d be safe”
“is that possible?”
“huh?”
“Mortal in land of gods”
“Well I.. I don’t know” Kate admitted, “but Lex must have thought so or else why would he have been bringing me? it was his idea to….”
The roaring growl vibrated through the land powerful enough to be felt turning attention firmly back to the battlefield.
“He will kill you”
“What. That’s insane. Lex wouldn’t kill me”
“Not Lex, not now. Lex before, War now.”
Their souls fueled his rage. A soldier torn in two, then another. Each death, the last bits of life their bodies held when their souls let go was his food. It filled him with energy and drive. He felt powerful. A single swipe could take off arms, a roar could deafen any opponent and he could bite through plate male like butter, the very ground even trembled beneath him.
And the scents. Oh lord the scents.
The blood smelled like a delicacy, and the sulfer and smoke in the air only make it easier to breath.
War didn’t care for anything but the fight. Not even which side was which. Each group of soldiers he encountered, he clawed and mauled and stomped, emitting shockwaves of power that could break bones even of those he hadn’t touched yet. They all fell, he cared not for the color of their armor or their flags.
One thing that bothered him. One tiny thing they pricked at his otherwise happy mind was the tug. Something was tugging him form behind the eyes, or maybe it was the back of his head. He couldn’t be sure but there was something. something there that was pointing him in a direction. It was as good of a direction an any, he supposed, but still. something wasn’t right.
“Lord Xavier” A worried assistant stammered, “S-sir, he’s killing our men as well.”
“I can see that.” An annoyed Lord snapped back, “We knew some would die of course. so long as he kills more of the enemy then us he may still be an asset despite his volatility. How are his movements?”
“Movements sir?”
“Yes. Is that mage able to direct him or not? He’s not coming our direction is he?”
“uh. n-no sir. he he is advancing farther into the enemy ranks.”
“See he is a good weapon then”
“A weapon that kills our own, even at a slower rate than the enemy… troop moral will suffer”
The lord brushed off the concern with a wave of his hand and a grin, “With this weapon the only troops needed are just enough to start the battle then we let out the demon beast. We can replenish the ranks from the local villages. They don’t even need training, not with him out there.”
“I… understand sir”
“We have to stop him!” Kate announced waving her arms at the battle and pacing around.
“How?” The wind asked.
“I don’t. I don’t know.. I’m not a soldier. but. I… I have to get down there somehow” Kate said, “If I can talk to him, maybe get through to him somehow”
“Dangerous”
“I KNOW!” Kate shouted exasperated. “You’re a god, can’t you do something?”
“Weaker than him”
“DAMN IT ALL.” Kate exclaimed, “I’m going down there”
She was a few feet towards the battle when a sudden gust of air hit her in the face, lifting her up and dropping her back down on her bare butt. “No…”
“What! I can’t do nothing, and you can’t control me!”
“I will keep alive.”
“Why do you even care? I appreciate the ride here, but I’m… I’m nothing to you aren’t I? some immortal elemental like you?” Kate staggered back up, “why should me being alive matter to you?”
“Interesting female” The wind explained in its increasingly annoying simplistic manner of speech, “Promise to friend”
“Well I’m flattered you think I’m interesting but…” Kate paused for a moment, “Wait friend? You mean the forest? the vine thing that wanted to study me?”
“Yes. Promised return.”
“I suppose I did promise to go back once I was done.” Kate started, “but my purpose is to save my mate, and I don’t see how else to do that other than going down there and trying to get through to him.”
“No weapons. No armor. To dangerous. Will die.” The wind said, curning in anticipation of knocking Kate on her butt again.
“Ya I suppose that’s true” Kate looked down at herself, “No clothes either” Kate was partially shocked by how normal it was starting to feel too just be naked. She had lost her clothes when she had escaped the castle, then again when the bitch that took Lex had burned their stuff, but it didn’t feel that odd anymore. Maybe she had gotten used to it spending so much time in the buff. Maybe it was spending time with Lex, and now these other gods, who had little need for clothes. Not counting lex’s fetish saddle of course. She smirked at that memory and looked out at the battle again as a rumbling roar came up the hill side. She wondered if Lex’s submissive side was part of how he kept the ‘war’ contained, just add that to the list of things to ask him later. Other than that though he didn’t normally need anything, like the others. Maybe they just didn’t care, maybe it would be a barrier from connecting with nature.
Kate looked over at the roughly direwolf shaped swirling mass of leaves and dust. Come to think of it, she had started just tumbling around inside him, but over time she had gotten some sort of control of herself. It got more and more like she was one with him rather than separate. at least at times, she almost thought she could feel through I’m to the rustling trees as they few by. Maybe it was her imagination, but it cave her an idea.
“Hey, Mr. uh ‘the wind’ I have a question”
“Ask”
“Could I… Wear you?”
For about the first time in her memory the wind looked confused, even with the barely-a-face that she could see, “For what purpose”
“I have no weapons, no armor, or even clothes.” She explained, “you wont let me go down there because its to dangerous and you can’t fight Lex cause he’s too strong”
“Reiteration, but still correct”
“What if you came with me, but around me. Like make yourself just a little bigger than me and coat me, you could help me move much faster and move me yourself if some danger happens. And maybe we can get close enough to talk to Lex.”
“Interesting female.” Was the only reply that the wind gave
“Is that a yes?”
“Will pull out if to dangerous. Do not complain”
“I understand.”
Once she accepted his terms she felt the wind flow over her. His/its/their? warm air flowed around her, coating her tail, her legs, her stomach and chest, and her arms and head. The swirling leaves and dust that made up the only visible parts of the wind now swirled around her as it settled into place. The air pressure pressed on her slightly, like a full body elastic suit, enough to feel snug all over, but not restricting her movement at all. Aside from the constant airflow over all parts of her body, including more intimate areas, it was honestly pretty comfortable.
Kate took a deep breath, feeling the wind’s warmth flow in and out of her lungs and all around her body, then took off running towards the battlefield, and towards her man.
