I will say that in this image, the focus is more fully on the face. The level of detail drops the further away from the center of the image you get, and this draws the eye toward the face and adds a better composition overall to the picture. It makes it appear as if the creature is staring at you, the viewer, whereas the other image is much flatter (although your clean lines, in general, are very good.)
