1. Caranoctian troll / World of Warcraft troll
Okay, fair enough. They're both trolls, and we're both ripping off the same source, Dungeons & Dragons (1974). And D&D is, of course, swiping from Poul Anderson's "Three Hearts and Three Lions" (1953/61).
Steal from the best!
Caranoctia started as my "world", and my trolls began as as homebrew troll-human hybrids because I wanted them as a playable character species. I came up with them back in the late 80's/ early 90's, long before Warcraft (1994). Before the internet, even! If you've ever read any of my current Caranoctia stuff, trolls have gotten a LOT weirder and more unique since then (there is a racial variant with bluish-grey skin and orange hair, but I don't draw that often because of this). So, pointy ears and pointy noses aside, the similarities are superficial. And at least mine don't have those stupid-looking tusks.
2. Vargr / Gorilla
Vargr are my take on werewolves, and basically they're a U-turn in human evolution - what we'd have looked like if Australopithecus evolved fangs and claws instead of tool use to compete against lions, hyenas, leopards and all. So obviously they're both anthropoid apes. The resemblance wouldn't be nearly as close if it were a full body shot.
This concept really seems to confuse and enrage people who think werewolves are only allowed to look like Rob Bottin's design (wolf head on furry human body, or whichever ripoff version they're most familiar with - Van Helsing, Underworld, etc). Their confusion and rage amuse me.
Plus, hell, I really like gorillas.
3. Elliot Sangrail / dog
Elliot is a lemur. Specifically a Sclater's or Blue-eyed Black lemur* - not a dog, or a fox, or a weasel. I've gotten a bit better at drawing lemurs since.
4. Sean Connery werewolf / Na'vi
Um . . . they both have yellow eyes?
Seriously, wtf people? A furry wolfman and a blue cat-elf-alien? You do realize WOLVES have yellow eyes? People have also said it looks like a tiger because, as I mentioned above, werewolves are only allowed to look exactly the same as Goldenwolf draws them, otherwise they're not really werewolves.
On the other hand, I originally just drew this as a random wolfman. Foxhack pointed out that he looked like Sean Connery and damned if he wasn't right. I swear to god that never crossed my mind before that.
5. Ratha from Clare Bell's "Ratha's Creature" series / Warriors cats
I had never heard of the Warriors books before someone made the comparison. I hate to break it to you, kids, but if anyone is ripping off anyone, it's the other way around. Ms. Bell's book came out in 1983. If anything, the Warriors series sounds a lot more like "Tailchaser's Song" by Tad Williams (1985) or "The Wild Road" . . . or Rudyard Kipling's Cat who walked by himself, or Puss in Boots . . . yeah, intelligent, speaking cats aren't exactly a new concept in fiction.

* Yes, the coloring is "wrong". Usually male blue-eyed lemurs are black, and the females are orange. This should tell you something about Elliot.

It drives me crazy when people ask if the Ratha books are take-offs of Warriors, because Ratha pre-dates Warriors by about 20 years (and the books are really very different). I agree that the wolfman in #4 looks a lot like Sean Connery, but nothing like a na'vi.
DrkKaiser: Actually, there are five Ratha and the Named books now. In addition to the one above, Le Demon just finished the cover art for book 3, and is working on book 4.
The books are:
Ratha's Creature
Clan Ground
Ratha and Thistle-Chaser
Ratha's Challenge
Ratha's Courage

When little kids ask for animal/cat books, always someone recommends Warriors. I point them to Ratha's Creature and say "you want something well written that makes you think? Right up there with Watership Down and Call of the Wild? Get yourself some Clare Bell".
Seriously, that series is totally underrated. If I ever get the opportunity, I want to do a filmic adaptation of it.

I would absolutely love it if you did that.....
You might enjoy some 3D Ratha animation I did on You-Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWr_JjlymAY
I was trying to visualize her a little better.

Avatar looks like everything ;)
Well there is a theory in the Warcraft universe, which I'm sure the Elves will dispute, that the Elves descended from trolls...
And Elliot? He has the body of a man, but the ambition of a woman!
I think your Vargr look a little more animal than gorillas... their noses aren't punched in, and they don't have the neanderthal brow. Actually they're more lion-like here, but it might be the thick mane

About Avatar?
With regards to Elliot, I've had characters whose sex I didn't really know, and it was better before I tried to delve into them. I don't know how you feel about that. But to me it isn't a problem for a character who isn't 'sexual'
But then your mind begins probing

It's not exactly new, but it's usually a bit smaller and more subtle. I'd always intended for them to have a pineal eye but it's an easy detail to overlook especially since it doesn't have eyelike features like lids, etc. I was afraid if I didn't emphasize it people would mistake it for a very symmetrically placed wart, or a bindi.
You're right, WoWtards see anything fantasy these days as 'like ___________ from WoW!" as if ol blizzard built everything fantasy.
And Avatar is called up everytime anything hexapod or blue shows up. BIOLOGY IN THAT FILM MAKES ME CRY, DOES NOT WORK.
Bonus points for you having primate related stuff! I made a werepoodle once. The weres were not happy.

Yeah, like I said people only seem to have a knowledge of stuff that goes back about 5 minutes. It causes me much nerd-rage. I still haven't seen Avatar, and I honestly don't think I could enjoy it because of the crappy-looking aliens.
A were-poodle actually makes a twisted kind of sense, since after all dogs are domesticated wolves and we're domesticated apes. Did you see the "Twilight" parody where the dude turns into a guinea pig? I laughed my ass off.

Noooo, but sounds amusing..I only watched chunks of Avatar because of people accusing some of my critters as 'copies' from there...and wanted to see what reputed things they were talking about. I WAS ANNOYED BY THAT MOVIE GREATLY. Would not reccommend.
"It took the director 15 years to make the movie!"
"Then it goes to show, polishing a piece of crap for years doesn't make it a diamond."
As for werepoodle, logic was all them modern 'werewolves' one sees in cityscapes would reflect domestic dogs...and a poodle's a great shaved example of an embarrassment to nature.
I would say it's sort of sad too, that when one likes something from legend, myth, lore or old stories...and the bandwagoners of the latest trend make assumptions you're just like them when some new dumbass game or movie comes out with the same names of creatures.
'You know your basalisk doesn't look like the one in the Harry Potter movie! It's wrong!!!111'
'Here's some old books to read, maybe it'll broaden your mind beyond it's current scope.'
I tell folks at my work dragons aren't all that strong...because in all those old legends..they tend to die alot. But rarer is deaths of gryphons, or sphinx, or so on...and frankly, a old school norse troll is a goddamn scary mountain-giant-kin bastard. TROLLS EAT DRAGONS, KIDS. NO TELL ME ABOUT YOUR ERAGON BULLSHIT.

Hell yes, I love trolls! D&D got me into them, and reading the actual legends. Great stuff.
Seriously, I'm a fan of werewolves and there's so much that makes me grind my teeth. Kids calling them "lycans" which is the most ridiculous name possible (sounds like "lichens", ooo scary). "Vargr" sounds like something you could pronounce in feral form! Insisting the were-puppies in Twilight "aren't werewolves, they're shapeshifters". Because a guy who turns into a wolf couldn't possibly be . . . a werewolf? And I've gotten so much crap on writing forums cause my werewolves don't follow the Curt Siodmak rules - they aren't particularly susceptible to silver, they don't change only on the full moon, etc. etc. Oh, I could rage for days.

/me pats knowingly.
I understand your pain. Personally it's funny! I like almost all myths, and so on, they're fascinating! But people are very...irritating when they start some power trip and anal retentitive stuff about what is 'real' about invented monsters.
Look at the minotaur! In the first versions, he looked like a human with just a buffalo-ish bull head! Now everyone expects them to be cow-head, hooved, digigrade legged, etc...
People do this to animals too...you like animals, but dislike folks who act like their animal of choice is a godly powerhouse of amazing superawesome.
Poor charismatic megafauna, you're so being maligned.

3rd one on bottom had me in stitches, but painkillers can do that. Also your trolls and werewolves are much better looking IMO. People always bring up something to compare with, often something we've never even considered until after the fact. I also tire of it. There needs to be an IQ bar for comments sometimes...
Ohmygod I just have to say THANK YOU for pointing out the Warriors/Tailchaser similarity. I was exposed to the Warriors mythos recently by a friend who loves them, was like OH MY GOD SERIOUSLY? they are ripping off TAILCHASER? And the friend was all 'NO WARRIORS IS YOONEEK, THE AUTHOR HAS PROBABLY NEVER HEARD OF THAT'.
Yeah, talking cats, not that original, but the naming conventions are nearly identical @_@

Yeah that's p much it from the little I skimmed through 9_6 also they didn't seem nearly as well written as Tailchaser >:| I demand quality from my talking cats!
Ah, having Tailchaser nostalgia now... GOD that's a good book XD if you liked it, and you recommend these as well, I shall have to check them out!

Oh yes, I remember reading Tailchaser on the 2-day trip home to my house from my grandparents (every Xmas - mom refused to fly) and being absolutely sucked into it. I still reread it every once in a while just for the sheer pleasure of it. Other than talking felines and high quality, the Ratha books are quite different, but I recommend them highly. There's a hell of a lot of depth to them, and the main characters dilemmas really make you think.
That dog costume is damn scary!!!!
I so love your take on the werewolf!!! THAT would actually be far more believable imao.
Had read "Warriors" but do have a copy of "Tailchaser" though. I thought it was a sequel or something to Tailchaser!
Far as the lemur, he's COOL!!! Characters can be whatever you want, there is no rule to them unless *you* make them.
And can't stand the "THIS LOOKS LIKE THAT!!!!" comments either. Never mind most of said images these comments are directed to were drawn like YEEEEEARS before.
-BT
PS
Avatar...nope. Didn't like it.
Globs of eye candy, yea; but that's it.
