Hee, hee, I actually got my PS-3 used after the PS4 came out. Learned a cool trick, install an SSD, you can upgrade your storage, and overall performance too, since the SSD is a lot faster than the original mechanical hard drive!

The PS3 conversion was pretty simple (As long as you had wired internet to get any system updates... Which there will be given everything's age.) The PS had everything built in on the mainboard to format the new drive.
X-Box was a little more complex. I'd recommend googling it to be sure what to do. But it still wasn't that much trouble.
Either system would erase all your game stuff when swapping hard drives. I think there was a way to get some of your stuff backed up beforehand, but when I did my PS, I had just bought it after watching the Ratchet and Clank movie.
