I dunno, man, I'm just really fucking bad at backgrounds. But this looked super unfinished without one, so I spent like 2 hours in Photoshop assembling the damn thing.
This is nightmare-mode. Learning to color, etc. I think I managed to get the hang of it halfway through, but where's the contrast and the depth? But I mostly never want to look at this again (not even to add a signature lol).

sometimes for a cheap background people just enlarge the image, decrease things like saturation/contrast and enlarge it... and optionally apply some goofy photoshop filters
there are easy ways to a cheap background! you just need to learn to cheat
cubone is really cute here!

Why the hell didn't I respond to this, wow
I think I was going to and didn't finish or something. Anyway, thanks for the compliment and the advice. <3 I honestly never thought of that, and it's a super good idea -- usually I just make some scribbles or something and apply goofy filters to that, but duplicating the image seems a lot less hit-or-miss.

Wow! This doesn't need more contrast - the muted color makes it look antiqued, or even almost folk-arty (at least to my eye). Maybe my brain's gone haywire, but it reminds me a bit of the old Yoshi's Story motifs, which, along with this, set the standard for cuteness!
Aww, thank you! I think it's the texture I tried to do that might be reminding you; I remember the art Yoshi's Story as super textured, although more in the vein of crayons and clay than whatever this is. Muted color is something I need to work on -- I really try to give it warm shadows, at least, especially on the sandslash. But I'm really glad you like it so much. <3
