The calm before the storm, and yet for some reason I don't think this is the storm. I actually think that Nigel's going to take this a lot better than we might think. However I'm actually more concerned with what happens afterwards, and I'm hoping that it isn't what I think is going to happen, though if his ref sheet is any indication, I fear that it is likely going to happen. I really REALLY hope the "Family Tradition" isn't what I think it is.
First and foremost Nigel's ref sheet makes in evidently clear that shit happened, and it changed him drastically, the cloths he wears here are are tidy, high quality and he looks well of, whereas in the ref sheet he looks impoverished and the cloths he's wearing are of low quality, not only that, this prologue chapter has made it abundantly clear that he originally wasn't a eternally peevish and sulking individual but a rather hard working and positive person. Furthermore he talks in a way that would imply that he's been forgotten, and or cast aside.
As many had assumed, he wasn't going to get chosen, but like I said, considering how he is now, sure it would upset him, but I don't think this will make him hate the world, if anything, I can see him taking the failure in stride, and using it to work harder.
However that ominous feeling that I got, from everything that we've been shown, in addition to Nigel mentioning that "he was too young to realize how sick it was", gives me the impression that his family has a very twisted tradition in regards to becoming guardians, and it leads me to believe that one, Nigel's parents are going to do a complete 180 in regards to their treatment of him, two, Toby is going is going to end up receiving all the love and support from his parents and Nigel is going to end up getting pushed to background like he once did, which is probably going to gradually change his personality, and three Toby's going to succeed where Nigel failed, and in doing so his parents are going to disown him, for not living up to his families expectations.

I think it's more of a case of, if this is the path that he wants to walk, then there's nothing wrong with that, but he has to genuinely want to walk that path himself, and have the personal desire to do so, and not go on that journey because he was made to by others. For comparison, Leopold has a motive and is 100% devoted to that cause, not only that he chose that path, and worked hard to ensure that he would be successful at all costs. Whereas Nigel from what it seems, he is on this path not cause he chose to be, but because he was expected too.
It's likely he wasn't chosen not because of his bad traits, which to be entirely honest from what's been shown so far he doesn't seem to have many, he's seems like a good natured kid all things considered, but because he, as an individual doesn't have a personal motive to become a guardian outside of what is expected of him and following tradition

I set another Bet: he didn't pass once, now his parents focus in on his younger brother (with more pressure, but Nigel just see his brother stole his parents love)
or he never return home to avoid to face his parents and tell his fail after all those over-expectations
in both cases, he abandon his home with the belive he wasted his childhood

Immediately enormously curious why. O.O So many potential variables. Hoping it will be something like 'you either got it or you don't' so it isn't technically his fault it's literally just something you're born with or not and his family line were just incredibly lucky. @.@ Doubt that's it but just feel it would be a huge weight off the little guys shoulders if it was simply never an option to begin with rather than something he failed to do somehow.
The worse part about this... Is that Nigel had the immature right to turn on Luna, for considering him "Unworthy" (Like how Tai Lung did.)
Yet he is mature enough not to do so, instead rightfully condemning his family for their ways and methods. (His role is very much "Protagonistic", not "Dragon to the Antagonist", since his attire and weapon would have reflected his allegance... Also, I am rather certain the Antagonist would have had the decency to force-feed Nigel every now and again.)
From this scene and the image, Nigel is not a "Tai Lung", even though his backstory should have reflected it, but here, he doesn't try to condemn her... Instead, his Vitrol is aimed not only at his family, but at himself as well... Feeling that he's not worth a damn... (Crap, I just imagined Nigel as a 40K Krieg Soldier.)
...I'm still going to imagine Nigel having to be forcefed by his Party members... Matter of fact, I think I should try making it myself when I get the drive...
Wait, I just realized something... If these Guys became Chosen as Guardians... Where the Bloody Helheim did they Go by Chapter one?!

If watching both Kung Fu Panda and The Rising of Shield Hero has taught me anything, it's how to know what kind of story this is gonna turn out to be. Basically, I believe Nigel's background story is gonna be a mixture of Tai Lung's childhood and training to be a mighty warrior and Naofumi's tragic tale of being betrayed and abandoned by those who he thought he could trust.
That is a good summation on what is happening here. Nigel was groomed to be a guardian as tradition for his family. Somewhere along the line, the way his parents raised him caused him to become unworthy in the Tree of Life's eyes. It's obvious that the way Nigel ended up was his parents' fault, not his. Probably arrogant fools too prideful to see that it was their mistake on why their son didn't become a guardian.
