A scene from Voyage’s (my DND character) backstory, featuring the archdemon Masquerade.
The long and short of it is that Voyage is actually dead during the campaign. Him and his wife Journey were beheaded in a barbarian raid on their coastal village. He ran into Masquerade, who informed him Journey was trapped in Shadowfell.
Masquerade would bring him back to the surface, and if he killed the specific barbarian who killed Journey, he would be exchanged in Shadowfell. A life for a life and all that. If he failed, Voyage would belong to Masquerade.
Masquerade did not inform Voyage that when he arose from his own grave, he wouldn’t remember anything.
All he knows is his name, and one song. A song he wrote when he was alive. My Journey.
