One of the first computer designed cars... it was designed for the rotary that GM was planning on building... then GM decided not to make it so it ended up with a inline six banger.
They rode nice and handled well... were not bad for mileage. I liked the wagon over the sedan.
I almost picked up a wagon to put four wheel drive under it.

Hey dummy I was an adult when the Pacer hit the market and was up on the R&D of the car so reread my post and show me where I said GM made the car. I said the car was designed around the rotary that GM was planning on building but GM dropped the R&D of the motor, that AMC was going to put in the Pacer. AMC was left with a car design but no motor for it. So the solution was remake the firewall to accept the AMC six.
Its giving me memories of a few childhood vacations from 1974 to 1976. Dad bought one off the showroom floor, took it home, loaded up the night before a trip - in the morning it didn't start - bad battery. Neighbor jumped it for us, we drive to dealer, AMC dealer gives dad the run around. Dad gets pissed, tells mom to take my brother and I well away from the building. Manger goes why? Dad told him either change the battery or he was going to put it back on the showroom floor - thru the big plate glass window.... We got a new battery.
Lets just say that Chevy Chase Vacation movie was a bit popular with Dad and I -- after we saw that film we refered to the old Pacer as the family truckster
