Thing is, with the bracers being tapered, and smooth-looking metal, the wrappings would probably quickly be worked loose just with normal movement (ask me how I know... ;) ) so having the claws also secured to a glove or strap around the paw would reduce the flexing motions and give more control of the weapon.
