Syd is an archaeologist who specializes in ancient civilizations. He went looking for the lost temple complex of one such civilization and eventually found it. Unbeknownst to him, the civilization revered an ancient symbiote and its host as a living god. After the civilization collapsed, the symbiote and its host sealed themselves in the temple, hoping that one day someone would come to free them. The symbiote kept its old host alive for centuries in a near-mummified stasis, but once Syd found them and opened the sarcophagus, Obsidian got a new host, whether he liked it or not.
