Butter is a Plott Hound mix in real life; he has a nose that is always searching for the next best edible thing. If he can't eat it, he will probably pee on it and move on to the next sniffable object to repeat the process.
In the real world, I understand that Plott Hounds are generally not used for military or police dog duties, unless it is for a "man-tracking" mission, mostly involving search-and-rescue. Plott Hounds spend too much time sniffing and exploring down their trails-- single-minded to be sure, but also taking too long for the usually fast-paced needs of uniformed services.
I love my Plott Hound boy and I like making him the star of the show when I can, even if it is unlikely to happen in reality.
